I just saw Ruben Gonzales and Ibrahim Ferrer in concert a few weeks ago and the live performance put me in awe of these talented musicians. The rhythms and melodies that Ruben strings together are heavenly - his technical mastery of the piano is unbelievable. Absolutely perfect music; listening to this music helps us through the cold and drizzle winter in the Netherlands. If I had to chose one cd to take with me to a deserted island, it would be this one definitely. But one should also try Compay Segundo (Lo mejor de la vida) who also joined Ry Cooder and Gonzalez at the recording of Buena Vista Social Club.Free Music Review: A rare gift from a national treasure.

This is a beautiful, lyrical, enchanting album that can be listened to on many levels. For setting a relaxed, upbeat sunny weekend mood, this is a lovely choice. For deeper reflection, Gonzales' effortless phrasing and rhythmic playfullness are near awe-inspiring. This is my favorite album. It is so beautiful, they music so moving. What an unbelievably gifted musician. I find myself wondering what it must have been like in 40's and 50's Cuba and if everything else there is like a time capsule - all bottled up with no exposure to the outside world. This is one of the best discs out there, both for its virtuosity and for its song selection. The songs are authentically Cuban and Gonzalez finally has been rescued from an obscure old age in Cuba -- the guy couldn't even afford his own piano. This disc is a must have in any serious Cuban collection. Great recording too.
