Free Music Review: Let Those Who Have Ears Listen...
Hit: 5 Stars
Do not judge this album for what it is not but rather for what it is. I think this is why some may be disappointed with Ruben's latest CD as they are looking for something else: they would prefer that he record an album with an entirely different repertoire, perhaps a collection of vocal standards in the genre of his masterful and superbly rendered "For All We Know" or "Superstar".
This therefore, is the crux of the matter. For those who "get it", they will understand why he chose to make a contemporary gospel album the second major release of his career. They will listen to the music and be able to hear its message of the spirit. And for those who have the ears, it is richly rewarding indeed: for there is beauty, love and hope to be found in these songs.
Ruben's latest work is a proud and unabashed tribute to his faith, which is clearly a fundamental influence in his life (listen to his heartfelt "Center of My Joy"), from whose deep wells of strength and inspiration he draws forth such beauty and joy that resonate clearly in his marvellous, "velvet teddy bear" voice. It is an offering, a thanksgiving of the musical kind.
As for myself, his "Amazing Grace", is worth the price of admission alone. Reverent and stirring, it is an uplifting rendition of a traditional hymn given an additional contemporary edge and Ruben here "makes it his own", backed by a glorious choir no less. My other personal favorites are "Shout To The Lord" and "I Surrender All"; both sung with such unaffected humility and honesty that one can almost picture "Mount St. Smooth's" endearing, dimpled smile as he voices the lyrics. These are wonderful love songs, not of the earthly kind, but instead to God, which makes them somehow even more meaningful and worthy.
Other songs such as the titular "I Need An Angel" and "Fix It, Jesus" are more boisterous but equally enjoyable performances in their own right. In fact, all the songs here are very approachable, given their contemporary twist.
And I also enjoy seeing (hearing?) Ruben reveal different aspects of his musical self with each CD he releases; the fact that he can comfortably embrace different genres and styles is a further testimony of his talent and versatility. The material here may be different (and hence unfamiliar to some), but it represents Ruben's important musical roots and his fans will recognize the same beautiful voice and heartwarming rendition that makes him such a compelling singer to listen to.
So what's next? An album of contempory R&B/Jazz-inflected ballads perhaps, in the genre of "The Nearness of You"...I can hope and dream! I have enjoyed this new album of songs (as I did with his debut album "Soulful") and look forward in great anticipation to his next effort. Highly recommended.
