Rufus Wainwright is one of those artistes that constantly garners tonnes of critical acclaim, which somehow fails to translate into sales. With "Release the stars", he sets out to right that wrong.
The first I heard of him was on the soundtrack to "Moulin Rouge" (La Complainte de la Butte), as well as his awesome performance of "Hallelujah" on the "Shrek" soundtrack, and I was hooked.
As lush, poetic, and cinematic/operatic as his other releases, this finds him upping the pop factor in his music, and even reigning in Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant on production.
Lead off single, the stunning piano ballad "Going to a town" is a perfect example, with a forlorn vocal delivery set against a swelling string backdrop as he ponders "I'm going to a town that has already been burned down/I'm so tired of you America". My absolutely favourite track.
"Leaving for Paris no. 2" is a simple piano ballad with a gently caressing vocal delivery, apparently originally written for the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack.
The title track "Release the stars" has a sweeping jazz feel, and "Sansoucci" ups the tempo a bit, with quivering guitars and sparkling piano.
Other standouts are the humorous upbeat "Between my legs", the sumptuous "Tiergarten (with sixties sounding harmonies), and the soaring classical sounding "Tulsa" (with dramatic strings).
Lavishly orchestrated chamber-like pieces, that awesome nasal/emotive/melancholic voice, and striking the perfect balance between pop and classical, here's hoping this is the album that brings him commercial success.
