Free Music Notes for Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall [2 CD]Free Music Review: Only one thing missing Hit: 5 Stars
So wonderful to hear a contemporary singer breathe some new life into the old standards. I love it when performers don't allow themselves to be bound by one genre. This recording has brought all the joy back into my heart that I felt on June 14th up in the balcony of Carnegie Hall. This was no vanity piece - it was performed with heart, soul, love, and just a little wink of the eye. The reviewer who referred to Mr. W.'s vocals as "painful" sounds like a member of the hard-line old school friends of Judy club. Listen to the music, folks. Sure, Rufus has some vocal challenges, but Judy's voice alone was not so stellar all the time either. She warbled, went off pitch sometimes, missed words, messed rhythms. But sang with emotion and meaning and grit and honestly. And Rufus did pretty much the same. I've waited for this cd since the concert ended. My only disappointment is that Rufus' rendition of Every Time We Say Goodbye was left off the cd. This was one of the most glorious and poignant moments of the concert, and frankly the song I was most looking forward to on cd. But, hey, it will likely turn up on a bootleg or maybe even an official release. As for the cd - buy it. It is a loving tribute to one of the great ones. While you're at it, buy hers as well.
Free Music Review: Rufus Reigns Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great piece of work! Rufus has done what no other performer would dare! He is personable, confident, and above all in fine vocal shape. I am so happy that this was done by him. Judy was the worlds greatest performer and this homage is just the thing to reiterate that fact. When you hear the opening bars of the overture you are transported to 1961. It is not perfect, but none of us are. The imperfections only add to the performance instead of undermine it. This is a highly recommended CD for all people. Not just fans of Judy Garland. These songs stand the test of time and they are classics! I am now a confirmed Rufus Wainwright fan and have also bought 'Rufus Rufus Rufus does Judy Judy Judy at the London Palladium!' (click on this link for more info) Rufus! Does Judy Live at the London Palladium I would like to thank Rufus Wainwright for a fantastic piece of work and thrilling experience to hear these songs in the complete order they origianlly appeared on Judy's Carnegie Hall album.....Rufus, you should be very proud of yourself. Nice job!
Free Music Review: A LOT OF FUN; A LOT OF GOOD MUSIC Hit: 5 Stars
I saw some of this performance on PBS a while back and love the music, and was particularly enthralled with Rufus' sister Martha's rendition of STORMY WEATHER. Talk about emoting! Talk about theatrical! It is one of the greatest solo performances I have ever seen, and it's also a lot of fun to listen to it on the CD. Rufus' voice is fine and I particularly love the humor you can hear in his voice as he is singing these great songs. It's a lot of fun to listen to (as well as to watch). It is thrilling to hear him sing SAN FRANCISCO. I love the live orchestra. I really love hearing the audience's tremendous appreciation/applause at the end of each song.
I did buy "Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall" and listened to it right after Rufus' CD. There is no argument that Judy had a fantastic voice, much better than Rufus, but that does not take away from the pleasure of hearing him sing these timeless songs. I highly recommend both CDs, and no matter what you think of Rufus his sister's version of STORMY WEATHER will stay with you always.
Free Music Review: Bold and Succesful Hit: 5 Stars
Rufus does a fabulous job re-creating the Judy Garland concert on this live album, but one must keep in mind that Rufus Wainwright is NOT Judy Garland and therefore if you are judging it expecting it to be Judy Garland with a male voice then that is entierly the wrong approach here.
Rufus shines brilliantly on songs like "do it again", "over the rainbow", "san francisco", "come on get happy", "foggy day", "if love were all" and many others. Lets not forget that the stlye of some songs is very campy and old school ( I wouldn't like some of the songs on Judy Garland either) so this is not the kind of CD one would play at a get together with friends, at least I wouldn't.
Overall, Rufus charisma and one of a kind vocals still come through when the songs itself are good enough to showcase it.
Free Music Review: Rufus is an experience. Hit: 5 Stars
To appreciate Rufus in this concert is to understand him, his family, the influences on Rufus' talent and the gay rights movement. Judy Garland is woven throughout, from Rufus rejecting folk music as a kid and embracing the swing music of the Garland era to her concert's impact on the Stonewall riots. Judy is a gay icon for MANY reasons and as Rufus has grown as a gay man, he is celebrating his life and this is a way for him to tie a lot of things together. I happen to think the man has an incredible voice...a singing voice and voice for individual freedom. I am older and so admire our young gay musicians who can live out and proud. I think he channels Judy's spirit beautifully. I plan to give this CD as a gift to friends this season.
