Free Music Notes for Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall [2 CD]Free Music Review: Hey Martha, Come On Let's Go....... Hit: 3 Stars
Holy Smokes Martha! Stormy Weather has left me wanting so much much more from you in this genre. You really should record an LP of covers of Lee Wiley and Mildred Bailey. You have what they had. Perfection.
Free Music Review: I really wanted to like 2 Stars
Fist, let me say that this is the first full recording I've ever heard of Rufus. I've only heard a song or two of his before, and since he is proudly out and gay, I've wanted to hear what his voice and style were like. Plus, since this concert is SO iconic, I thought this might be an interesting way to discover him. I went into this knowing that there was no way he would be able to top Judy- of course, NO ONE could.
And the more I heard of it, the more I just didn't like it. I agree with other reviews here that his interpretations are just lifeless and flat. His style is just TOO laid back, which doesn't work for a lot of these songs. The energy just isn't there- it sounds like he just woke up and hasn't had coffee yet.
Plus, there's 2 aspects of his performance that just irritated me. One is how he seems to slide up to a lot of notes, instead of just hitting them. And the worst on is his pronunciation of "e" words- me, she, he, etc. He sounds like he's saying heh, sheh, meh. Call me picky, but that just bugged the hell out of me. I can't stand singers that can't pronounce the words they're singing clearly.
The orchestra is really good, plus I do give Rufus points for undertaking such a program, so I gave it 2 stars, but that's it. If you're a big Rufus fan, you'll have to have it. But it you're a really fan of the songs, go get the original- NOTHING can top that!
Free Music Review: Rufus Hits Bottom Hit: 2 Stars
Re-creating Judy's legendary Carnegie Hall concert is like remaking "Citizen Kane." WHY, IN GOD'S NAME? Well, commercial novelty comes to mind; artistic ego also seems to have played a part. Here is the reality: Wainwright CAN'T INTERPRET THESE SONGS. His voice is not suited for the material and he seems to have little affinity for the lyrical content (going so far as to disparage Gershwin's "Who Cares" prior to singing it!). On just one example: Judy dipped into her warm lower register for the sexiest "Do It Again" ever recorded; Rufus does it in near-falsetto and drains it of all eroticism. I could go on, but that would be giving this project more attention than it deserves. All of Rufus' fans will buy it anyway, as he well knew, giving his bank account a nice boost without having to write any new material about his poor choices in boyfriends (i.e. "Release The Stars," his recent weak effort). "Want One" stands as the strongest testament to his true talent as a contemprary singer/songwriter... but that was how many years ago? Maybe he will surprise us with a mature, deeply-felt original effort, but for now his songwriting talent seems to have peaked. I gave this two stars for the terrific arrangements (Nelson Riddle? Mort Lindsay? Both?) which have stood the test of time quite nicely.
Free Music Review: What a disappointment! Hit: 2 Stars
I consider myself a huge Rufus fan. I have traveled from one side on the US to another to see him live. I really enjoyed the performances of his own stuff. His most recent album, I did not enjoy so much. Still, several members of my family converged at the Hollywood Bowl for the Judy show. It was awful. He frequently missed notes and made light of it in a very unprofessional way. I was actually embarrassed for him. Then...I was embarrassed for me. I brought all of my friends there. I felt like I should pay for dinner. I guess Rufus has very loyal fans who will support him in anything. After the show, every person in the group, all Rufus fans up to that point, we all panned it. This album is either not too good, or it is not an approximation of the real experience. It was cool to see Rufus' sister who really stole the show with Stormy Weather and Lorna did a fun job. Seeing Debbie Reynolds in the audience was cool. Really someone should have told Rufus that he was not up for this. The mystique over Rufus is gone for me and my friends. Its sad. I hope his next album is really good. I will not be buying any new Rufus until then.
Free Music Review: It's only half as good as I thought Hit: 2 Stars
I received this as a gift and thought "WoW" this is going to be great. Just to hear a new spin on the songs, but after listening to only 10 minutes I found myself listening to a voice that is whining, strained and the poor guy can't even articulate. It's as if he knows the music is fantastic, People love Judy and this concert and he is just good eye candy. Sorry to say he can't hold his own on this concert. Just when I thought "Hey, maybe he's going to show this song off and then it just hangs there. It was a good thing he had a few other singers join him as it was getting very mundane to listen to his voice butcher most of the songs. He's best as his own music. I applaud him for trying.
