Then one night, for no apparent reason, I thought I'd listen to the CD in full. Suddenly, what I didn't get when I listened to the first time,I got.....in a big way. This CD is amazing. I have many CDs that I would consider my favourites but there are only a select few that I would consider a totally involving musical experience. Among these are "So" by Peter Gabriel, "Tapestry" by Carole King and "OK Computer" by Radiohead. Rufus Wainwright now sits proudly among this collection.

I don't quite know what makes it good. He doesn't necessarily have the greatest voice, the songs are not necessarily the greatest ever written, nor the production necessarily the most original. But it works...and it works plenty for me.

You can't listen to this just once and expect to like it straight away. In fact, the best way to listen to something like this initially is not to be that conscious that it's there. Spin the disc, do the housework or read a book and just let it play in the background. Then you'll find yourself humming, stopping what you're doing, going over to have a look at the CD cover and thinking "Geez, it's actually quite nice".

Some have said that a couple of the songs are too similar but I don't find that a problem. If anything, it adds to the continuity of the album as a body of work. Over time, I found that although I've listened to the CD many times, I would "discover" a particular song on it and hear it in a way that I haven't before. That's as best as I can put it into words and some may find what I'm saying a bit loony but hey.....I've been called a looney for a lot less so..... Anyway, I love "Danny Boy" on the CD. If you listen to it closely, especially if you have a good system, you'll hear so many different and interesting sounds- the atmosphere they create just adds to the gentle ache in Rufus' voice.

I know he won't be everyone's cup of tea and I won't force my opinion on anyone. All I have to say is that this CD will be played at least once every month for the rest of my life and I can't say that of many CDs I own.

By the way, does anyone else in Sydney like the CD? If so, let me know cause all my friends think it's nothing special and I don't know anyone else who has it. Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only one listening to it and who likes it around here and I know that can't be the case.
