Free Music Review: Violent Femmes meets Tom Waits meets Circus music
Hit: 5 Stars

Despite having not advanced into October as of yet, I can (still) safely say that this is the album of the year, folks.

The opener -- "Oh What a World" -- may be the most impossibly gorgeous, stunning song of the 21st Century. What you have here is Violent Femmes sneering vocal circa 1983, meshed with Tom Waits' soundworld circa "Rain Dogs," meets Circus music (and that's a HIGH compliment).

Furthermore, the lush orchestration on all tracks is nothing short of jawdroppingly amazing.

This album is vastly superior to just about everything I've heard over the past nine months.

I don't care what Rolling Stone or Spin says, this is easily a 5-star album (and I don't grant 5-star ratings too often, either).

Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Career Highlight
Hit: 5 Stars

Released in the fall of 2003, Rufus Wainwright's third album took his listeners by surprise since there was more of a gap between his first and second albums. While those two records established Rufus as an unprecedented, undeniable force in chamber pop music, it's not until this record that the sound comes full circle. The music is a lot more lush, as is the production, which manages to sound slick at the same time, which is an enormous feat. It almost feels like a magic trick, this marriage of pop music with classical elements, territory that was to be pushed to the max in the second volume of the Want CDs. Favorite tracks are 14th Street and most especially Beautiful Child. That song is so very cool. Essential hearing.

Free Music Review: WHAT HAVE I DONE TO MYSELF???
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this CD a week ago, and I was initially disappointed. Unlike Greek Song, Poses and Grey Gardens from his previous release, there were no cuts that made me want to hit the "repeat" button. But I gave it another chance, and another... Now it's the only CD in my player. I hear snippets of these beautiful songs in my head everywhere - while watching a movie, during staff meetings, before drifting off to sleep... There isn't a single weak song, but the standouts are Vicious World, Beautiful Child, Dinner at Eight and the title track. Lush, complex, ethereal, and poignant tunes - Want One has it all. I feel sorry for those who say, "Rufus WHO??," when I gush about the best thing that's happened to music this year.

Free Music Review: Wonderful
Hit: 5 Stars

With "Want One," Rufus Wainwright takes us on an amazing musical journey. His voice is wonderful, though not for everyone. My personal favorite track is "Movies Of Myself." The bass line carries the song very nicely. It is next to impossible not to be tapping your foot when the chorus comes around.
This album, like Rufus' musical influence, is a huge production. And I mean that in a good way. Lots of backing choral-like vocals, and elaborate orchestral arrangements give the record a very full sound. However, don't overlook the stripped down solo piano tracks like "Pretty Things."
Overall, this is a tremendous musical effort by one of the most talented musicians in the biz.

Free Music Review: Brilliant and Original, Glamrock meets the symphony orchestr
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the most brilliant album I have heard all year, Rufus has finally found his grove here, in a niche of his own, music that has never been invented before, Glamrock meeting classical, brilliant to say the least. His voice has incredible range and scope, and the album has excellent melodies with a touch of opera. The lyrics are incredible and nearly impossible to understand, it's just a genius album. Track number 2 stands out as the single, excellent production work. The song about Medusa and rebel angels, left me stranded, brilliant song, fantastic. Why did you have to break my heart incredible song, reminds me of something from elton on tumbleweed. Movies of Myself , great song. This is a truly breakthrough work
