Free Music Notes for Want One

Free Music Review: Lush Operatic Pop Sensation
Hit: 5 Stars

This is my all time favorite Rufus CD (to date). It's got the clever lyrics and phrasing I've come to love from Rufus, along with lush production numbers that showcase his stylistic voice and range. "Oh What A World" is the signature track from the album for me, and "Vibrate" is a clever track you'll love if you're a fan of singer songwriter tracks.

It's Rufus at his best, and a MUST for a new or convinced fan.

Free Music Review: Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is a masterpiece. There is no denying it. Want one and Want two are pieces of work that Rufus will have a hard time creating again. You really do have to listen to both back to back - which may take about 3 hours since they are pretty long, but these are definitly works of art. I encourage all to purchase and listen. I've given both as a set as gifts. It takes a while to warm up to because it's very different. But Rufus displays his fragilness in these two works and backs them up with his strong artistic, soul searching, bold self at the same time. Partake!

Free Music Review: A SUBSTANTIVE, SURPRISING LET DOWN...
Hit: 1 Stars

Over-arranged. Over-produced. Over-everything.
What a brilliant artist.
What a complete, over-blown let down.
What a disappointment.

Free Music Review: heart-feeling and stunning duo (Want One and Two)
Hit: 5 Stars

I made a decision after listening Rufus' singing (He ain't heavy, He's my brother) over a radio program, and give a try on Want One and Want Two (the latter has his live concert DVD)
when I play Want One, I am pretty stunned, even a listener over 30 years, with all kinds of genre, found he has a pretty good and heart-feeling voice
my favorite:
I don't want what it is: perfectly matched voice and music
Go or Go Ahead: he sings in soft at first, and bring to high tide with 3 loud guitars, pretty good
Harvester of Hearts: singing in Jazz style, surprising good
Beautiful Child: very Disney feel, why?
Want: this is pretty smooth like flowing water, the most favorite followed by "Go or Go Ahead"
11:11: I can't explain how good it is, but this is my 3rd favorite
I give 99/100 points, this is an excellent CD for all (but recommended for listeners over 30)

Free Music Review: One of the Best Albums of the Last Decade!
Hit: 5 Stars

Rufus Wainwright's soaring vocals, combined with his intriguingly obscure lyrics and sumptuous melodies, make this an album worth listening to over and over again. A true masterpiece!

The ambitiousness and sophistication in the production of "Want One" set it apart from his earlier works. Wainwright has shed some of the recognizable influences in his early sound and has come up with something truly his own and unique with this album. He has established himself as a visionary artist along the likes of contemporaries such as Tori Amos and Bjork.

There is something profoundly touching about Wainwright's voice that pierces my heart and can move me to tears. My favorite song on the album is probably the euphoric "11:11". There is a particular passage in the song that I find uplifting, when he sings, "But I was alive/And kicking through this cruel world/Holding a notion of you at 11:11" as he playfully modulates the key and shifts the phrasing in his vocals. I also enjoy listening to "I Don't Know What It Is", "Go Or Go Ahead", and "14th Street". The words float endearingly on Wainwright's voice.

Wainwright's lyrics are very personal and can seem very oblique on one level. They are about very specific times, places, memories that would be difficult to contextualize without a proper map to Wainwright's soul. But whether you deconstruct the music or just allow yourself to be immersed in it, the experience is very intimate. Few artists are able to take their listeners to such places.

On Rufus Wainwright's website, you can learn more about the stories behind each song. There is also interesting background info on the dvd, "All I Want".
