Free Music Notes for Caress of SteelFree Music Review: people are crazy for not giving this 5 stars! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all i have to say that caress is probably one of my top 3 favorite rush albums and i am a huge rush fan. I think real rush fans would not give this album any less than 5 stars. Those people who say this is rush's worst effort are pretty much either def or not listening. I think geddy's voice is awesome, its so emotional and different from so many singers, i love it. alex plays some hard and fast riffs throughout and well as for neil peart, we all know what hes capable of. not to mention the lyrics in this album i think are great. I think im going bald may be the only song that has somewhat weak lyrics, but the other epic songs have awesome lyrics. this album i truly believe, aside from yes's early work is where progressive rock was really born. so many people overlook this album and i think thats ridiculous. I would recommend buying it and if you dont like it then just give a few tries and it will grow on you. thanks for reading.
Free Music Review: SUPERB! Hit: 5 Stars
I must be a RUSH fanatic, because this entire CD is great! The worst part of the album was having to flip the darn thing over to hear "Fountains of Lamnenth"! This is definitely old-school Rush, since Geddy stills screams, because he hasn't had vocal lessons yet. That's a plus; I don't believe any of these songs would sound as good without the screaming. I'd say what's bad about this disc, but I can only say it eventually ends. "Bastille Day", "I Think I'm Going Bald", "Lakeside Park" and "The Necromancer" are great! If you're into great music, with lyrics that tell a story, Caress of Steel is for you. I have to thank Clyde for turning me on to Rush. Of course, he was a drummer and who better to idolize other than Neil Peart. One warning, after I picked this up 2112 came out and I bought it, too, then I saw them live with UFO and Max Webster and I was hooked for life. Rush is ADDICTIVE!
Free Music Review: Need more stars! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm giving this album 5 stars only because there aren't more to give. Simply put, this masterpiece is the finest musical work in the history of mankind! Besides that, I like it! My favorite song of all time is "Lakeside Park". I am fortunate enough to live within a day's drive of Lakeside Park, ( Yes, it's a real place - just outside St. Catherines, Ontario in a little hamlet called Port Dalhousie ), and have visited it several times. As an ardent fan of Rush, the thrill of seeing the actual lighthouse & hearing the very same merry-go-round mentioned in the song is immeasurable. As for the other songs, one can argue their merits, or lack thereof, indefinitely, but in the end the experience is purely subjective; either you like it, or you don't. And once again; in my humble, yet correct, opinion, "Caress Of Steel" is unquestionably the finest musical work this world has ever known. So there!
Free Music Review: Among all the things wrong with this album, Hit: 5 Stars
From the botched cover, where the whole thing was supposed to be silver (as in steel) but it came out with a bronze look, to the 'Down the Tubes' tour that nearly had them dumped from the label, the music is the one saving grace. Musically, it's the real beginning of what was to follow for the next 5-6 years at least. But knowing the history of it gives it even more appeal, don't you think?
A difficult album to listen to: kind of depressing in a way (particularly 'The Fountain of Lamneth'), but irrepressible in the hold it gets on you. Even the much-loved '2112' doesn't grab you like this album does - once 'I Think I'm Going Bald' or 'Panacea' gets into your brain, it will NOT go away. And some of the riffs are still some of the best guitar parts ever. For that reason alone, it would be my favorite Rush album, beating even the ultimate 'Festival of Alex Lifeson' album, 'Permanent Waves.'
Free Music Review: Underrated - one of the band's finest early releases Hit: 5 Stars
CARESS OF STEEL, the third album by Rush, was intended to be the band's big breakthrough album. It was far from that, however; fans and critics alike deemed it a failure. That seems unfair, though. While it's not the band's crowning achievement, CARESS OF STEEL is one of the band's finest early releases, sporting two popular tunes ("Bastille Day" and "Lakeside Park") and the band's first two epics, "The Necromancer" and "The Fountain of Lamnenth". Of course, the album also features the rather ridiculous "I Think I'm Going Bald", but at the very least that song is amusing. At the heart of this album is Alex Lifeson's guitar work, which fluctuates between being strong and powerful and being easy-going and breezy; this is especially apparent on the dreamy "Lakeside Park". Although CARESS OF STEEL was considered a flop, Rush finally had their big breakthrough on their next album: 2112.
