Free Music Review: My second live Rush set....

...my first being R30. I found Geddy had some strains when trying to hit the high notes in R30, losing some diction and it sounded like he was in pain. That is not at all present in Different Stages. Geddy's voice is not as strong as it was in the 70's and early 80's, but he can still send a chill down your spine hitting the high notes.
First of all, why does Amazon list this as a box set? If the cardboard case it comes in is a box, then my car is a brand new Ferrari, and I don't even have a car. While we're on the subject of packaging anyways, I'd like to say that I would have preferred a jewel case to hold the three CD's and booklet, but whatever suits the three boys is what I'll accept. However, it does get a little messy with the cardboard. CD's one and two, recorded in 1994 and 1997 (T4E and CP I'm guessing) are inside little slips in the cardboard itself, like miniature LPs. The booklet (Which I think they could have done much better on, but oh well) is in another little slip-slot in the center. The third CD (1978) is included in a seperate slip case, which is thrown in with the mix, nothing to stabalize it, almost like an afterthought like, "oh yeah, we ought to put this one in there too!" I think they could have at least found room on the outer case to store the third CD. I hope Rush in Rio isn't that way too, although I won't mind too much if it is.
Anyways, enough griping about the packaging, that's the least important part of the CD anyways. Moving on to the music itself. The song selection is one of the best, topped only maybe by Rush in Rio. The first CD includes Show Don't Tell, my favorite Rush song at the moment, Closer to the Heart and Limelight for a good variety of older stuff, and songs such as Bravado and Nobody's Hero for newer stuff. It is also the first time that 2112 is performed in its 21 minute entirety live. The closest to it you will come on any other CD is All the World's a Stage, in which Presentation(I think) is cut out. The only downside is that the song is dropped a full step, but if it weren't, Geddy might be a mute by now!
The second CD starts off with Test for Echo. I actually don't have the Test for Echo CD, so Different Stages is the first time I've gotten to hear Driven and Test for Echo, and so far my impression of the CD is good enough that I want to get hold of a copy. CD 2 also includes Freewill, a song that I rather enjoy, Roll the Bones, which would be my favorite if it weren't for the hip-hop section, and of course, The Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer(I love these songs and all, but gee, how many re-releases can you do of them? I would have much rather seen a live version of Cygnus X-1 book II: Hemispheres or maybe La Villa Strangiato, or even something from Power Windows like Mystic Rhythms or Manhattan Project). Two extreme instrumentals are included on here too, those being YYZ (with a hint of Cygnus), and The Rhythm Method- the second Neil Peart solo that's got a track to itself. Being a drummer myself, I found this solo to be extraordinary, and YYZ has ALWAYS been a favorite anyways.
The third CD was recorded in London in 1978, right around Rush's peak time for live and studio recordings. This is what I guess you would call the "classics" CD recorded in the Classics voice. Bastille Day, By-Tor, Xanadu, Farewell to Kings, Something for Nothing, Cygnus, Anthem, Working Man, Fly By Night, In the Mood, and even Cinderella Man, which I haven't ever even bothered listening to the studio recording of! Xanadu is awesome, not to mention it's one of my favorite Rush songs, I'd always wanted to hear Farewell to Kings performed live, and as I said before ,they even threw Cinderella Man in there.
The mix is quite good on all three CD's, and although it isn't as good and polished as a studio recording, it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to sound live, and by golly it does. I strongly urge that if you don't have any live Rush that you buy this set first. It will be a good investment.
