Free Music Notes for Exit Stage Left

Free Music Review: Corny as it sounds, this one changed my life
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok, let me set the scene. I was about eight and most of the music I heard was stuff involving muppets or whatever was on the radio, like Juice Newton, The Go-Go's, or Hall and Oates. (ouch that hurts to admit publicly). Then my brother goes to see Rush on the Signals tour and brings home a copy of this album. And it all changed. At the time I had no idea what I was hearing but over the years my ears adjusted and for a long time Rush was all I listened to. Since then I have become a music nut in general and explore far and wide through many different styles. But I always come back to this one, It was my first real musical love and Rush has become part of my D.N.A. It's a spectacular album, capturing the band at a high point in their career. Fresh off "Moving Pictures" which has become the bands calling-card, Exit Stage Left is a brilliant portrait of both the youthful, experimental band they were (Xanadu, Jacob's Ladder) and the more concise song writers they would become.(Closer to the Heart, Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio) Through out it all their musicianship is obvious, though never overwhelmed by their virtuosity. It's a lush, dense album, though some fans take issue with the production. I have recommended it many times to people new to Rush, and they are usually quite pleased. I know I certainly was.

Free Music Review: Not the best live album ever, yet insanely good
Hit: 5 Stars

There are several things you can judge a live album for, and this one ranks quite well on most of them. Some of the ones where it's "weak" are: mix (uneven at times, leaning a bit more toward Geddy Lee's bass), sound quality (between songs, specially) and the general live feel (arguably, there weren't too many mics pointed at the audience, so you don't hear very loud "roars" between tracks).

On the flip side, the album ranks so well on so many other fronts, that the downsides pale by comparison. The musicianship, above all things, is bound to leave you speechless: Geddy Lee's basswork and Neil Peart's drums are out of this world (take the "YYZ" looooooong solo by the latter as the best example, easily making the entire album worth buying). The fact that the band sounds just as well live as they do on the studio says so much about their work too. Some people argue this is bad: I dare to say this is where a musician gets to prove him/herself, by matching or exceeding the studio work.

All in all, given the items mentioned before, while not the best live album EVER, this is a great piece to add to your music collection to sum up the band's work as well as to enjoy outstanding performances of several of their classics which by now have become prog rock standards.

Free Music Review: The 2nd Best Rock Live Album of All Time!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard this album I was 14 and musically never the same again. I bought this on vinyl, cassette, and yes even eight track. The production is excellent although if you are a purist you will not like the fact (like Kiss Alive!) much was reworked in the studio so the recording does not have a "true" live sound (Get Rush in Rio if you want that). The most mesmerizing piece here is the encore song La Villa Strangiato. The guitar solo sounds like Lifeson is pouring every ounce of emotion he has into it. I've never heard anyone top since the energy, emotion, soul put into their guitar playing. It was here that I realized Lifeson was better than Page and Clapton. I've never heard a guitar cry like this. It is truly amazing. What is missing though is the full concert from the tour. You only get about half of what they played back in 1981. When they went on the road they also played 2112(overture and temples), the grand finale later in the show, two parts from Cygnus Book II (Prelude and Armageddon),Vital Signs, The Camera Eye, Limelight, Subdivisons, Working Man, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, In The End, and In The Mood. These songs are not here. Maybe one day (like the re-release of The Song Remains The Same)they will release the entire show as a double or triple package.

Free Music Review: The best live album I will ever own, but its a shame........
Hit: 5 Stars

I've owned this recording in a number of forms vinyl, cassette, and cd, but what troubled me about the cd version was there was no inclusion of "Passage to Bangkok" when I first bought it. Well I bought the cd again, because this is clearly the best "live" album I will ever own!!! I used to listen to this recording on cassette tape back in high school when I had my first walkman. I would walk around D.C (sometimes in some pretty bad neighborhoods), with my headphones cranked, sit on the subway or bus, and blow the whole world off, my god when I listened to this music it felt like I had this giant drum kit wrapped arround me. You better believe I did, and the best damn percussionist (in the world I thought) was playing it all; every cool percussion instrument you could think of !!! Things were tapping, crashing, poping, sliding, ringing, belowing, and slapping !!! Imagine the professionalism that was involved in the creation of such a project. Nobody, nobody put it together like Rush! Neil, Alex, Geddy - so what if they were a little different they're timing was incredible - never again will you be exposed to such a creation. If this is the only live recording you ever buy, you'll be surely impressed.
