Free Music Review: Definately one of Rush's best albums
Hit: 5 Stars

I have really started to become a big fan of Rush lately. They are simply without question one of the best, and I DO mean one of the best progressive rock bands ever, and they're also in my opinion the best rock band to come out of Canada. Their seventh full length release from 1980 Permanent Waves is an amazingly brilliant prog/rock masterpiece, and it's definately one of Rush's best albums as well. I've really been listening to this album alot lately ever since I got it a little while back, and it has really become one of my favorite classic/progressive rock cds as of late, and even though I love metal, but I've also been a sucker for good classic rock, and Rush are truly one of a kind. With Terry Brown once again producing, Permanent Waves showcases Rush mixing their brand of progressive/hard rock with a more radio-friendly style, and the results are just excellent. They've also drifted away from the sci-fi/fantasy lyrical themes (that were present on "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres") and moved to more human related topics as well. This album is practically short, being only 35 minutes, and there are only six songs, but they're all excellent and worth mentioning of course with the acceptions of the two popular singles "The Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill", and longer proggish cuts "Jacobs Ladder" and "Natural Science". Frontman Geddy Lee is an awesome vocalist, and while he does sing at lower ranges on here, but he still has that unique high range especially on "The Spirit of Radio" and "Natural Science". He's also an amazing bassist as well, his basslines are just clean, sharp and downright awesome throughout. The guitarwork of Alex Lifeson is awesome as well. His riffs are just fantastic and his solos are excellent especially on "Freewill" which features one of his most memorable solos ever. Neil Peart's drumming is just amazing and powerful, and his lyrics are simply brilliant and very intellegent as well. He is truly one of rock's all time best and most legendary drummers, and he's also a true lyrical genius too.

Now here's a look at the songs.

Kicking off Permanent Waves is the highly energetic and ever-so popular radio hit "The Spirit of Radio" which lyrically deals with of course the radio, and it's effect on us music listeners. This song is truly one of Rush's most popular songs and one of my favorites by them as well. This song features some of the most recognizable guitar riffs in all of rock. The chorus is very catchy and memorable, and I also like that line from the second verse "ONE LIKES TO BELIEVE IN THE FREEDOM OF MUSIC". There's also a cool reggae part, as well as an awesome screaming guitar solo by Alex. Next up, we have "Freewill" which is another popular radio cut that deals with personal beliefs, and the consequences of them whether they're positive or negative. There's also that awesome, whirling guitar solo by Alex around 3:14, and as I mentioned before it's one of Alex's most memorable solos that he's ever done, and the chorus is just great too. Track three "Jacobs Ladder" is a 7 minute epic and mysteriously atmospheric prog-rocker, and one of the more proggish songs on the album that is highlighted by an awesome, steady melodic guitar solo by Alex, along with unbreakable walls of fierce, crunching riffs, and there's also a bizzare yet awesomely atmospheric synthesizer piece from Geddy in the middle. This song has really become one of my favorite Rush songs lately, it's just simply awesome, no questions asked. Track four "Entre Nous" is an awesome intellectual-oriented ballad that features subtle, yet commanding singing vocals by Geddy, and nice catchy melodic guitarwork by Alex including some great riffs in the verses, as well as some nice synth parts. The chorus is very nice and melodic with some nice acoustic guitars backing it up. "Different Strings" is a nice acoustic ballad (which is much more softer than the previous track) that features some guest piano from the band's long-time cover artist Hugh Syme, and finally we come to the epic 9 minute closer "Natural Science" which is written in three sections: "Tide Pools", "Hyperspace" and "Permanent Waves". Lyrically, "Natural Science" mostly deals with nature and the environment. I like how the song starts out with the sound of a calm ocean tide, and then it's followed by nice acoustic guitar section, before breaking into serious hard rocking territory with an assault of frantic, crunching guitar riffs (as well as some great soloing by Alex) pounding basslines, powerful drumming, and commanding vocals that will immediately grab your attention, until the song ends with a full ocean tide. This song is without question an epic prog-rocker, and definately one of the most epic songs that Rush have written.

Favorite Songs: ALL OF THEM OF COURSE!!

All in all, Permanent Waves is without a doubt an epic classic/progressive rock masterpiece that is truly one of Rush's best albums in their catalogue. This album is an absolute must have for every single Rush fan young or old. I also recommend "Moving Pictures", "A Farewell to Kings", "Hemispheres" and even "2112" as well. Do yourself a favor, buy this album now, and experience the freedom of music, Rush Style!!
