Free Music Notes for Power Windows

Free Music Review: Against the run of the mill...
Hit: 5 Stars

My first experience with Rush was Power Windows. I bought the album because one of my old friends used to like Rush. I happen to be a fan of New Wave 80's like Depeche Mode and New Order and also Classic/Metal bands like Blue Oyster Cult and Iron Maiden (among many others). This album seemed to be a great compromise between the two genres, so I instantly picked it up and ran with it. My favorite tracks are still "Grand Designs", "Emotion Detector", and "Mystic Rhythms". The album grew on me quickly and so I purchased many other Rush albums. Caress of Steel is currently my favorite album, closely followed by 2112. I love the epic songs of older Rush albums that have seemed to have parted with the band due to either commercialism or the dynamic change that any band would have over a 30 year span.

If you share my musical preference, then you will truly appreciate this album. Others expecting "Tom Sawyer" tracks may be dissapointed, but one must understand the era to understand the album. Peart and company have always utilized modern equipment, so why is this Rush (Synth) era so different?

Is this a good starter album for future Rush fans? Well that depends on your current music preferences. If you like Nickelback or Kid Rock, then no. If you dig the 80's, then this is right up your alley.

Free Music Review: Powerful and Flawless
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Rush at perhaps their most powerful, both musically and lyrically. This is a trend that would continue into Hold Your Fire. However, unlike that album, this one rocks much more.

Power Windows is an even more radical departure from Grace Under Pressure as Signals was from Moving Pictures.

The keyboards on this album sound beautiful and add so much texture. From the sweeping symphonies of Manhattan Project to the majestic chorus' of Marathon this album packs a powerful punch.

The rhythm section here is at it's tightest ever. Neil turns in some of the most complex and powerful drumming of all time and Alex's guitars are at their emotional peak...just listen to the heartfelt solo in Marathon. This album also marks the first use of overdubbed chorus' by Lee...something that will dramatically increase over the next few releases.

Again, there is a theme to this album...this time it's power. Power in money (Big Money), talk (Grand Designs), weapons (Manhattan Project), persistance (Marathon), world domination (Territories), dreams (Middletown Dreams), emotions (Emotion Detector) and the unknown (Mystic Rhythms).

This album ranks among the best Rush albums ever. The music ties in with the lyrics and the lyrics tie in with an overall theme...a masterful work that should not be overlooked.

Free Music Review: Excellent Album - One of Rush's Best
Hit: 5 Stars

From reading the reviews it is clear that people either love or hate this record. Although heavy in synthesizers, I agree with the reviewer that says Rush regularly reinvents itself. All artists reflect the times, and guess what people, this album came out in 1985! It's going to have synthesizers and its going to reflect music of the period to a certain degree. Fans should look at this record for what it is. Rush putting to shame the rock and synth groups of the 80's. They took elements from the decade's music, and flawlessly mixed them with hard/progressive rock sounds. As one reviewer states, if your waiting for Moving Pictures 2, 3, and 4, keep waiting. This is an incredible album with awsome production. If you don't like it because the sound is not your cup of tea, that's cool. But anyone who says this album lacks the complexity, songwriting, or production of their earlier works needs to take a more educated listen. The bass line alone in The Big Money blows away any bass line Geddy wrote up to that point. Ask any musician that likes to cover Rush songs, these are some of the hardest and most complex tunes to play, and not just because of the keyboards in them. Great record, my personal favorite!

Free Music Review: One of my "Desert Island" albums.
Hit: 5 Stars

Back in the 80's, the first two CDs I ever bought to use on my shiny new Technics CD player were the Rush albums Fly By Night and Power Windows. To this day, I rate these as my favorite Rush albums ever. Fly By Night flat out rocks out, and Power Windows is deep, melodic and textured. In many ways it's hard to believe that the two CDs were recorded by the same band.

It's funny how tastes change over the years, I remember how as a teen, Middletown Dreams was my favorite track. 25 or so years later, Grand Designs and Emotion Detector, two 'deep cuts', if you will, are the tracks that I feel stand above the rest.

Surely part of my fondness for this album is drawn from the fact that it brings me back to the days of driving around on warm summer evenings with my friends looking for trouble in my dad's Cutlass - carefree times that I thought would never end. But even beyond that, the album has held up musically over the years, and with my maturity, both as a person and a musician, I've developed an appreciation for things that I overlooked when I was younger.

"It's hard to recognize the real thing, it comes along once in a while."
