Free Music Review: Reinvigorated Rush reaches deep for their roots

This 2 CD Live set showcases Rush on their most recent tour in support of 2007's Snakes & Arrows live from Rotterdam in The Netherlands. Wow! Geddy, Alex and Neil are at the top of their collective games! It is hard to believe the "boys from Toronto" are now in their mid 50's. However, unlike many other geriatric rockers they have not lost any of their traditional intensity and even seem to have picked up a bit in recent years. They all look remarkably healthy and youthful (from the cd insert photos) and despite Neil's recent spate of personal losses(his daughter Selena in an auto accident and wife Jacqueline from breast cancer/a broken heart, over a ten month period in 1997-1998), have recovered very nicely and continue to write meaningful music well into their 6th decade of life.

This 2 cd set not surprisingly showcases the majority of Snakes and Arrows, not at all a demerit, as it along with their last original studio release Vapor Trails are 2 of their finest releases ever and certainly among the strongest releases since arguably Hold Your Fire way back in 1987! I am partial to many of the tunes but absolutely love Working Them Angels, The Main Monkey Business, an instrumental(1 of 3 on Snakes and Arrows) and The Larger Bowl. This release like Vapor Trails is power trio based much like everything up to Signals back in the early days and that is a great thing! Alex has gotten back to playing more acoustic stringed instruments, bazouki, mandola, mandolin and 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars pus a slew of Gibson solid body and hollow body electrics. Geddy plays more straight forward aggressive riff/chordal based 4 string bass primarily Fender Jazz basses (though the old black Rickenbacker 4001 makes a cameo visit on the recent tour) and Neil plays powered groove drumming (still often in 7/8 time and making it sound effortless).

What is also nice is the set list of earlier material. They have attempted to stop trying to please everyone and have abandoned their medley of early material, thank goodness, as medley's rarely please anyone. What they have done instead is discontinued long suites like 2112 and Cygnus X-I Book II the first side of Hemispheres, and instead have included deep cuts like A Passage To Bangkok and Circumstances from the aforementioned albums 2112 and Hemispheres. I can't recall ever hearing Circumstances live ever before and I've been to many Rush shows since 1981 so this is a great move on their part. Also A Passage To Bangkok had recently been relegated to medley time and was never particularly satisfying they do a great version here in Rotterdam! They have also pulled out two deep cuts from Permanent Waves, Entre Nous and Witch Hunt from Moving Pitcture, along with Passage and Circumstances they absolutely nail both! Neil's drum solo on the end of Malignant Narcissism, the 3rd instrumental on snakes and Arrows has really evolved over the decades and now showcases his tribute to and love of big band drummers such as Krupa and Rich(after Neil studied match grip traditional drumming in the 1990's demonstrating why he is the iconic drummer he is, a relentless drive to always get better even when one is seemingly great to begin with) and it has gotten very entertaining and fun! Neil can obviously take himself a bit too seriously at times, judging from his often angry/introspective lyrics, and his playful solo/tribute is refreshing to observe either on recorded medium or witnessing live in concert.

Overall this 2 cd set is a joy and is recorded very well. Buy it you will NOT regret it!
