Free Music Review: Test for Echo better with time

I have been a Rush fan since Moving Pictures and have seen them live 12 times over the years. In 1996 when Test for Echo came out I liked some of the tracks, but was not crazy about most of them. With the exception of the title track, Time and Motion, Resist and Limbo, I didn't really care for any of the others. I think I associated this album with the death of Neil's wife and daughter and the bands ensuing hiatus. Test for Echo could of been the last album. It wasn't and I really haven't listened to this album since 1998 or so. For some reason I wanted to hear Color of Right because of the line "Make it easy on yourself, there's nothing more you can do". I thought it was "take it easy" like the first chorus, but in any case, I listened to the whole album with fresh ears and really loved it! That one line stuck in my head after all these years, and listening to it helped my state of mind at that moment. I even loved Totem, Virtuality, the Color of Right, Carve Away the Stone, and Driven even! I laughed and chalked it up to maturity! I'm about 14 years younger than Rush, so it took me 14 years to really get it. I know that's dumb, but it's kind of true. Lyrics and passages that I thought were cringe inducing fill me with happiness now. Virtuality was way ahead of it's time (I know Neil hates that expression, but he's probably not going to read this) OK, I still don't like Dog Years, but ten out of 11 is not bad. I think this album is awesome with emotional and nuanced performances from all members, as you would expect. It hints at the harder sound to come and also the last traces of synthesizers to create layers and moods. Alex introduces the mandola, and while thinner than Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows, the guitar sounds and textures are amazing and pure Alex.
The enigmatic stone figure is an Inukshuk, a symbol of survival for lost or weary travelers. I still don't get what test for echo has to do with live crime shows, but I love the inukshuk and the satellites, which I did not appreciate before. Totem also draws from similar cultural symbols. And so what if I don't understand exactly, it's an awesome opening track. Awesome album you guys!
