Free Music Notes for Rushmore: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Free Music Review: heaven in 70 minutes, baby!
Hit: 5 Stars

Greatest soundtrack of all time, no doubt. This is one you can enjoy without having seen the movie, but you will love it a LOT more if you have (also the movie is super-duper excellentay). Classic British invasion stuff with Mark Mothersbaugh's (formerly of Devo fame)delightful interludes...highlights (well, they all are) are Rue St. Vincent(French 40's, doesn't really go, but does anyway), the long and live Who song (AMAZING), Ohh La La by the Faces (just gorgeous, intelligent and poetic lyrics too), and "Nothing In the World can stop me worrying Bout That Girl" by the great Kinks... but to single these songs out at the expense of the other classics is just horrible and wrong.. the whole album is SO cohesive and I recommend you watch the movie ( one of my all time favorites) as well.

Free Music Review: British Rock and Roll Saves American Youth
Hit: 5 Stars

Wes Anderson's original concept was to score the film entirely with the music of the Kinks. That would have been fascinating and effective, but this collage is a gem. Highlights include the angry exultation of The Who's coda, the immediate reference to John and Yoko riding bicycles in the park, and the curious, yet potent choice of "I Am Waiting" from Mick and Keith's catalog, just as stunning as "2000 Man" was in "Bottle Rocket." Hearing this music in a theater accompany (and lift) the scenes of such a strong movie is positively inspiring. Should Bill Murray pull off an Oscar upset, I hope they boom "A Quick One" as he hugs Anderson and Owen Wilson and jubilantly glides through the audience of Hollywood fools.

Free Music Review: A wonderful soundtrack to a funny and moving film.
Hit: 5 Stars

Wes Anderson chose wisely when fitting this terrific music to his brilliant film (and vice versa--I've read that in some instances the music was in place before certain scenes were shot!). All of the British Invasion hits work wonderfully in evoking the awkward alienation of one of the most original protagonists to hit the screen in recent memory. And it's frankly a delight to have access to these nearly forgotten gems: Cat Stevens' "Here Comes My Baby", Chad and Jeremy's "Summer Song", and Unit 4+2's "Concrete and Clay". As for Mark Mothersbaugh's pieces, I can't recall a more inspired use of the harpsicord! See the movie several times and then enjoy the soundtrack over and over. You'll be glad you did.

Free Music Review: Superb film, superb soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

Soundtracks don't get any better than this.

Truly great songs from Creation, Unit 4+2, the Kinks, Cat Stevens, Chad & Jeremy, and the Faces make this a must-own.

Note: "I Am Waiting," a great Rolling Stones song, is not here - you'll have to buy their album "Aftermath" (a worthy purchase).

"A Quick One While He's Away" is one of my favorite Who songs - I have about 6 different versions of it. Luckily for you, the one here is the best and definitive version. (The next best is on "The Who: Live at Leeds," which you need to buy right now.)

And while you're on Amazon.com, go ahead and buy "Rushmore" itself.

Free Music Review: Amazing score, but... CD's are just too short sometimes...
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved the soundtrack and Mothersbaugh's score is awesome too, but... *Sigh* The ONE complaint I have is the missing credit and addition to this soundtrack of "You Are Forgiven" by The Who. I know they put "A Quick One..." on here, but I really strongly feel that this song and maybe one other should've somehow been included... "You Are Forgiven" was a pretty important and featured song in the film... I actually particularily love the scene where Bill Murray runs over that bike, over and over again and really loved the use of that particular song in that scene... It's picky, I know... Wish they'd institute larger format discs for soundtracks sometimes. If they could...
