Free Music Notes for Russell Watson · The VoiceFree Music Review: Just bought the VOICE in Bellevue, WA Hit: 5 Stars
I've never written a review in my life until now. An ardent Russell Watson fan told me to buy the VOICE on Amazon.com and out of curiosity began to read the criticisms heaped on Russell Watson. It's amazing that his album is still generating reviews after it was released a year ago. That indicates to me that, as one Watson fan believed, one or two critics are writing a review every week or so for some odd reason, dissecting his voice like a lab specimen and this is a recording that is generating quite a bit of interest. Criticisms offset by 5-Star ratings aroused my curiosity to the point where I had to buy the album at a local record store. My recommendation for anyone pondering the purchase of the VOICE is to ignore the reviews, pro and con, and just listen to the sample selections without a critical ear, and, if you don't like it, let it go. For me, this is one album I can listen to over and over and I guess I join the other millions of buyers stupidly listening to Watson's unimaginative voice that has no charm or wit in singing pop songs, or being bored by the outlandish lush orchestrations which dominate his album, or enduring his lack of communicative power and narrow voice range in his classical selections. I am a fan of the great Pavarotti and some of the so-called crossover classical singers and am adding Watson, to my list of favorites. I believe Watson is in a class by himself. If Watson is terrible as the critics say, so be it. I enjoy listening to Watson's terrible voice in the VOICE along with millions of other ignorant music lovers. I've already put in my order for his next boring album, Encore, and will ignore the studio engineers amplifying his feeble voice. Loosen up critics and let us enjoy the mediocrity of his voice. He's not perfect but no one is.
Free Music Review: Fallen in love with Mr. Watson's voice Hit: 5 Stars
No amount of flattery would do Russell Watson's debut CD, "The Voice", justice. I'm still revelling, absolutely basking in the angelic warmth and moving love of his voice. In fact, I purchased two of the same CD and have set his CDs on repeat in my stereo systems both at home and in my car.Having fortuitously captured Mr. Watson's breathtaking PBS performance at Taj Mahal on my t.v. whilest channel-surfing, I was stunned and riveted at the beauty and brilliant resonance of his voice -- its purity, sweetness, and overwhelming ability to envelop and elevate you to a higher, almost heavenly place. I immediately went in search of his CD the next day and am completely enraptured by all his songs, particularly his renditions of "Nella fantasia," "Miserere," and "Funiculi -- funicula," all sung solo. You can tell there have been no special accoustic modulating and fidgeting with recording equipment and the gorgeous sounds are coming from his voice alone. I have listened to many opera singers and love very few; perhaps because I find many of their voices pretentious and arrogant, over-blown and self-congratulatory. However, the opposite is true of Mr. Watson. There is a certain genuineness and depth of passion in Mr. Watson's voice that draws you to it. It's as if every note he sings speaks directly to you and tells you a distinct story, and in sexy songs such as "Someone Like You," his voice is very much a serenade. I am, simply put, in love with Russell Watson's voice. I await enthusiastically for his next album.
Free Music Review: Critics seem bitter, still Watson is great Hit: 5 Stars
I actually don't have this CD yet (I have Encore) but I don't have to have it to write a review of Russell Watson's music. I have several of his videotapes of his concerts in England etc. containing the same songs so I know this CD will be just as good. His style, his voice, everything about the man's music is superb. As so many others have remarked, his music is also with me everywhere I go - at home, in the car on the road, wherever I am and whatever I am doing. He is simply great! I just love his music! I came here to purchase the VOICE and read how one critic mentioned he thought the number of favorable reviews were written by one or two individuals because their reviews were like promotions for a CD. Well, I too would write a promotional type review if I enjoyed a CD as much as we all enjoy Russell Watson. I'm sure all of the reviewers are just expressing their admiration of Watson and their love for his beautiful voice. People shouldn't have to be writers and write a one page essay to express their enjoyment of a CD. In fact when critics are writing derogratory notes about Watson's appearance, you wonder about what this is all about. Not only that but I get the feeling all of the critical reviews have a bitterness that just doesn't sound like a true, critical review. Reading the critical reviews, they all have the same general tone to them with words like charmless, defective, laughable. Unfortunately, Watson's success and talent is somehow unacceptable to the critics. Critics, let us Watson fans enjoy his talent. We love him.
Free Music Review: New Watson Fan from Pacific Northwest Hit: 5 Stars
I am a recent Watson fan. I first saw this controversial singer on his Atlantic City concert on Public TV and could not forget it. Like many of his fans, I was mesmerized by a performer who was singing both classical and pop songs. Watson is not as good as Pavarotti, Domingo, or Carreras, nor does he have the soft tones of Bochelli, nor does he rival any of the top pop or rock singers. But, watching Watson perform brought an excitement to me that I haven't felt in any performer since Judy Garland. I ignore whatever flaws he has in his voice because Watson is a special singer who communicates with the audience on a level in which I've never seen with other classical singers and many of the rock/pop stars. I believe you have to judge a singer not by his voice alone but as a performer as well. This is where I believe Watson is attracting such a loyal audience. His recordings may not be outstanding but I can visualize him singing as he has done on stage and that is enough for me. This singer is an all-around performer who is singing classical music, and in doing so, exciting a brand new type of audience, such as myself, who really are not into classical music. Because of Watson, I am again listening to classical music as sung by Pavarotti but, for some reason, I continue to listen to Watson more than ever. As I write this review thinking about Watson and his songs in the album, I realize how much enjoyment his songs have brought to me as no other singer has. That is what is important. I recommend this album. Period.
Free Music Review: You get everything with this CD Hit: 5 Stars
I didn't know Watson existed until I met a Russell Watson fan. I never heard his songs on the radio and the sound quality of the few samples of his recordings that I hear at the various web-sites such as Amazon.com are quite bad so it is impossible to be a fair judge of one's voice. If you go to the music stores, try to find a Russell Watson CD. It's unfortunate, but very few stores carry his CD. When I read the 5-Star reviews of Watson, that alone would not persuade me to buy the CD without first listening to it somewhere to enforce my decision to purchase the CD because we all have our own favorite singers and voices. Because my friend plays the Russell CD days on end as many of his fans do, I very much liked what I heard and bought this CD. I can't help but question the intelligence of the critics who say they buy the album based on reviews or go to the lengths of submitting a critical review, as some reviewer mentioned, after listening to an album purchased by their friends who I equally would question their sense of values. Buying a CD for a party joke? I don't even want to comment on that. But enough of the critics, more important is Russell Watson's CD. It's great. Watson sings the classics with a Mario Lanza -type voice and the semi-classics are sung with a mellow, opera-type voice and the pop tunes in the vein of many of the pop singers with a very pleasant raspy type voice. You get everything with this CD. Listen to it and see if you don't agree.
