Free Music Review: Perfect Title for this CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have heard some complaints that Russell Watson doesn't have the years of formal training as that of other classical artists such as Andrea Bocelli. This may be true; however, in my opinion, there is a richness and appeal to his voice that cannot be denied. I am also pleased that he has offered a variety of different types of music on this CD -- some classical (such as Caruso) and some pop (such as Someone Like You.) When a musical artist has the ability to selectively choose different types of music and sings them well, I can't help but question those whose critique is so negative. I feel the variety adds much to the listening pleasure of the entire CD. "Nella Fantasia" is done beautifully (of course, thanks should be given to Sarah Brightman, for it was she who pleaded (and successfully so!) with Ennio Morricone for quite some time for permission to put lyrics to this beautiful composition from the movie, "The Mission".) "Saylon Dola" is exquisite and so hauntingly beautiful that it has stopped people in their tracks as they were passing my office while this was playing on my CD player! My advice would be to listen to a few of the selections offered at this site and if you find Watson's voice appealing, I have no doubt that this CD will bring you hours of listening pleasure!

Free Music Review: I like Watson the best of the wonderful new singers
Hit: 5 Stars

I am new to Russell Watson.

I've been a fan of Safin, Frangoulis, Bocelli, and Groban for some time. All have lovely and beautiful voices. Bocelli and Groban sound similar with there soft, quivering beautiful voices.

But when I heard Watson, his voice was a clean and non-frilly voice that I just loved. With Bocelli, Groban, Frangoulis and all of the newer singers, I eventually tire of their voices, even though they are beautiful voices, but somewhat lackluster.

Watson has "voices" that I can listen to forever. He is exciting, powerful, soft, always surprising you with a new version of an old song.

We all have our own preferences and each singer has his own niche. I just can't group Watson with these newer singers because Watson is unique. He has a different voice for pop and opera and that's what separates him. His pop voice is just as good as any pop voice and he can sing like a pop singer. His opera voice is powerful, like Mario Lanza.

In the end, it's what you like, and I LIKE Watson. I still watch Groban, Frangoulis etc. on TV or listen to their music but this CD has convinced me that Watson is the one I prefer the most. Listen to the Voice and you will like it too. As a latecomer, I'll have this same review for Encore because I just bought Encore and I love it even more!!!!!

Free Music Review: Thank you Good Morning America
Hit: 5 Stars

Friday morning was a day I won't soon forget. I flipped on the GMA and there was this incredible voice as the song was almost over. I hoped I hadn't missed out on this amazing singer. Later Diane Sawyer introduced him again to sing, so I slipped a blank tape in the VHS and anxiously waited, and all I can say is 'WOW', he sent chills up and down my spine and Dianes' too. I got on the internet and read about his phenominal story and that made me like him even more. By Friday afternoon I bought the album and haven't been able to put it down, even downloading it in my computer (I'm listening to him as I type). To compare this Tenor to all the others, the big three and Bocelli would not be a premature statement. His rendition of Caruso, Panis angelicus and of course the spine tingling Nessun dorma will put you in another world. Someone Like You with Cleopatra Higgins brings me to my knees. This boyish looking 27yr old from Manchester, England, has got a wonderful future from bop to opera and I can't wait til he starts touring the US as I know he appeals to every age group and will be as big as any rock star without a doubt. Well, I'm going to kick back and listen....and I suggest you get to your nearest store and get 'the voice' and if they don't have it, order it or go Amazon.com. Ciao

Free Music Review: Classical Singer for Average People
Hit: 5 Stars

I like some classical music but I'm not a big fan of opera. However, I really like the album of Russel Watson. I don't know the guy and I've never heard of him. I was eating at an italian restaurant here in the Philippines when I heard a familiar and haunting tune, this time with lyrics. I heard the song from Ennio Morricone's Mission but there was a guy singing it and he's doing a great job at it. I immediatley asked the waiter what they were playing and he let me see the CD case. From then I knew I had to get that album. I checked out this website and I was surprise that there were such diverse reviews, either they liked it or they hated it. I don't care if Mr. Watson is not formally trained in classical music, he is good and the songs in the album was great. I like the collaborative work on Miserer (sounds like Bono of U2) and the classical greats like La donna e mobile and Nessum Dorma. My favorite is Nella Fantasie by Morricone. The only track that I didn't like was Bridge Over Troubled Water... somehow it didn't sit well with me. I think Russel Watson's album and I greatly recommend it along with Josh Groban's album. Both are great albums for ordinary people like me. Forget what everyone says, just listen to a few songs and you'll like it.. if you don't, then don't buy it.

Free Music Review: They don't call him "The Voice" for nuthin'
Hit: 5 Stars

The first time I heard him sing I was blown away- in a land full of fat old men siging opera- he is anything but- as easy on the eys as his voice is to the soul, Watson remains one of the most under appreciated artists of the day. This is my second copy of this CD as the first one mysteriously walked away. Russell Watson, is a man of many voices- this CD just shows one side- it's a beautiful compilation- mostly classical in nature. There is not a bad track in the whole thing but my favorite was Pelagia's song from Captain Corelli's Mandolin. This was his debut Cd. He has since done many more but this collection remains one of his strongest. I would also recommend Encore over Ultimate Collection. If you enjoy Josh Groban, you will definitely like Watson- except that unlike many other classically trained tenors, Watson can actually cross over to pop and rock without sounding like something is lodged in his colon (not naming any names here). On subsequent CDs the man's voice is truly versatile. He is a chameleon, moving seamlessly from Nessum Dorma to a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody to a popular Broadway show tune and doing them all meorably well. This, his first, remains one of my personal favorites. This one is definitely a keeper, but you will defintely want to hear more!
