Free Music Notes for Russell Watson · The VoiceFree Music Review: At last a Tenor with a personality! Hit: 5 Stars
Having just seen Russel perform live, I read with interest the opposing views on his abilities. His voice may not have had years of classical training, but you can hear and understand the words he sings. He switches effortlessly to pop, again with clear diction and a pure voice. He may not be overweight, but as he himself said, (to much laughter and agreement from the 45,000 people in attendance) "you don't have to be overweight to be a tenor." Let us give credit where credit is due. I have travelled the world and have seen most of the tenors in concert and for stage personality, the understanding that contact and rapport with the audience extends past a flourish of the hand or the raising of an eyebrow, Russell Watson beats them all 'hands down'. So you stuffy old 'classicos', loosen up and appreciate pure raw talent when you see it and perhaps you will begin to smell the freshness and love of life and music that Russell imparts with each performance. All said and done he has just managed to spend 12 months on the top of the UK classical charts. There must be something he is doing well. This album, his first, and the subsequent "Encore" do nothing but attract people to Classical Music. A fabulous album!
Free Music Review: Outstanding young talent! Hit: 5 Stars
I absolutely love this CD and cannot possibly say enough good things about it. His voice is amazingly pure and he is not afraid to apply his talents to different kinds of music, from pop to opera. His range is incredible, alternating between rich and powerful and light and haunting, not only between songs, but even within the same song. It is only unfortunate that he is not getting as much coverage here in the U.S. as I think he deserves. Anyone who criticizes his voice by comparing him to other more famous tenors misses the whole point. Here is a young man who has years to bring his voice to full fruition, although I already find it outstanding, and he brings to his songs a youthful energy and playfulness that appeals to those of us who enjoy music for what it is without needing to be snooty simply because it is "opera". I heard him say in an interview that when he hears someone say they do not like opera, he replies, "Oh really. What kind of opera do you not like?" to which they usually have no response. If you know someone who "doesn't like opera", try playing this CD for them. If this doesn't change their mind, nothing will.
Free Music Review: There will be copycats but Russell Watson is an Original! Hit: 5 Stars
One listen to the voice and it will offer you a true appreciation for this hybrid singer. I call him a hybrid singer because he is one of the new generation singers that have the range to sing beatiful, classical pieces as well as pop songs. Russell has the looks of a boy band star but he chose, instead, to follow his heart and bring beautiful, european music to the world's attention. While I have heard comparisons to Josh Groban let me just set the record straight. Russell Watson is the original while Josh Groban, who needs a good barber, is the copy. Russell's first album, the voice, was released in April 2001. Josh Groban's cd was released in May 2002. Both singers have worked with some of the same producers but there is no true comparison when you hear the range and beauty of Russell's voice. He truly could have been an opera singer and has performed in a few operas in europe. I wont bother to get technical about this cd. It truly is one of my favorites in an extensive mixed cd catalog that I own. What I will say is to listen to a few sample tracks and understand what so many of us in the U.S. and abroad already know: Russell Watson is King!
Free Music Review: Too bad I can't give it more than 5 stars... Hit: 5 Stars
I first encountered Russell Watson with his version of "Nella fantasia" featured on the Classical Hits CD (which I also highly reccommend). I was so impressed, and, to say the least, absolutely -enthralled- by his voice that I had to get "The Voice.""The Voice" showcases some of the best in classical opera as well as some catchy "pop" tunes, and a "New Agey" duet with Marie Brennan (Enya's sister for those who are unaware). Such versatility is not often heard, and hardly ever sounds this good! Unlike Pavarotti or some of the other famous tenors (who I do like as well, so don't send me any flaming emails!), Watson's voice has a more, how do I say?... pure and less arrogant sound to it. He can belt it out with the rest of 'em, leaving you so captivated by the song you hardly want it to end! If it is at all possible to be in love with a voice, then I must admit that I have fallen for Watson's. Russell Watson is a good introduction to opera, and even if you don't like classical music, I think you'll enjoy this CD. This should be appealing to anyone who considers him/herself a music lover.
Free Music Review: I love opera and Watson Hit: 5 Stars
I have been reading the reviews of the VOICE since I'm considering the purchase of Mr. Watson's next CD, Encore, and like others are astonished at the almost hostile critical reviews. The critics are so angry with their views that as I read them, it does not seem like a review but a personal attack on Mr. Watson, which seems out of place.Microphone or no microphone, I love Mr. Watson's voice. What has a microphone have to do with this CD? I'm sure that all singers recording a CD sing into a microphone. If I go to a concert I certainly do not wish to hear any singer, no matter how powerful their voice, sing without a microphone. The comments that people who buy Mr. Watson's CD are lowering the standards of classical music, I object to since I, for one, love opera, attended the Met, and know who the great classical singers are and know who have powerful or beautiful voices. There is room for all great singers and Mr. Watson is one of them. Whether he falls into the category of a true classical singer, only time will tell. The VOICE is an extraordinary CD that cannot be grouped into any classification. It stands by itself.
