Free Music Notes for CardinologyFree Music Review: A guilty pleasure ... Hit: 3 Stars
Adams's new album is his definitive footstep into the mainstream. It's full of simplistic lyrics and U2-like layers of overproduced guitars. Ryan's voice is hard to recognize, because it seems he tries to imitate someone else - a cross between Gram Parsons and Bono. Behind, his Cardinals simply do the job, without a lot of originality. All in all, this album would not deserve to be in my top 10 list of 2008 ...
That being said, it's hard to dismiss because it's full of catchy tunes with beautiful melodies so that you listen to it a lot. "Born Into The Light", "Fix It" and "Let Us Down Easy" are among the best songs I've heard this year. The result is very mixed feelings and my only hope is that this album will help Adams gaining more recognition toward a large audience as a songwriter (and not only as a junk, or as Love's boyfriend). I just hope he will release something more understated and more subtle in the near future !
Free Music Review: 3 1/2 stars......Adams does his thing Hit: 3 Stars
Ryan Adams' latest collaboration with his backing band the Cardinals is proof that when he isn't trying too hard, his true talents shine through. Anyone who has reviewed Adams' catalog can say without any doubt that the guy can write great songs......but he can also try way too hard to force songs that just aren't there. Many of his albums suffer from that inconsistency, you get teriffic songs with head scratchingly bad ones mixed in. That's not the case here. Granted, no song on this set comes close to Adams' best songs, but with the exception of the unremarkable album closer, "Stop", there are no duds to be found here. Adams' vocals blend seamlessly with the Cardinals' playing and nothing feels rushed or forced. It's the kind of laid back album that you could down a couple of beers to at the end of a long day. That may not be the most artistic of ambitions, but there's not a thing wrong with it when it's done this well.
Free Music Review: Largely disappointing Hit: 3 Stars
Over the last year I really became a Ryan Adams fan and bought pretty much everything that he recorded. Some albums were easily accessible and some took several listenings but they are all great. So I was pretty excited to see that a new album had come out. Up to know I felt that Ryan Adams was moving in the right direction with further developing his sound and songwriting from country records like "Heartbreaker" over stripped down albums like "29" to pop records like "Gold". I rarely saw him repeating himself.
Listening to Cardinology I felt for the first time that the guy ran out of ideas. Couple of songs remind me of earlier tunes and most of the songs are just uninspired. Since he is a great songwriter the album is still nice to listen to but the problem is: You just get bored. Some people said here the album grows on you. Not on me. He can be much better than that.
Free Music Review: Man I hate doing this... Hit: 3 Stars
....I am such a HUGE fan of Ryan Adams, but I just can't get into this disc. Granted, I've only listened to it a couple of times, but there is just something lacking - passion? Is it over-produced? I can't quite put my finger on it. If you're just being introduced to Ryan Adams, I would definitely start off with one of his earlier works (Cold Roses is particularly good), or any of his Whiskeytown discs are worth an introductory listen.
I'm hoping this disc grows on me. If it doesn't, that doesn't mean that my status as a huge fan will change.
Also, for those of you that haven't seen him live - that is something not to be missed. Saw him in Seattle last year and was completely blown away.
Free Music Review: Yawn Hit: 3 Stars
This is not a bad album, it is just boring. There are no bad songs, but only a couple of good ones. I've followed Ryan Adams's career since Whiskeytown and pretty much enjoy everything he puts out. Maybe this one will grow on me, because I really want to like it. It just feels out of place and flat. I won't lose faith in the guy though, since his track record suggests that he will release something new soon. If you really loved Easy Tiger, Cold Roses, or even older stuff like Heartbreaker, then Cardinology will probably disappoint you.
