Free Music Notes for CardinologyFree Music Review: Ryan Adams Review Hit: 3 Stars
Newest release from Ryan Adams is a solid effort of what you might expect from him since he has been working with The Cardinals. However, those who are fans of his earlier solo work, and original band Whiskeytown may be disapointed. This latest work lacks the diversity and cutting edge of his earlier work. The newest cd is filled with solid songs, none of which are bad, but also none of which stand out as memoriable as some of his best work.
Free Music Review: Ryan Adams & the Cardinals - Cardinology Hit: 3 Stars
Not the worst Ryan Adams album I've heard but far from the highs of "Love Is Hell", "Cold Roses" and "Jacksonville City Nights". I agree with someone else who reviewed this that he seems to be playing it safe and the songs, while perfectly nice, lack the passion of much of his work. It's not a bad album, just not something I'm going to listen to again and again and again is all.
Free Music Review: Good but not great Hit: 3 Stars
I am a huge fan of Ryan Adams, solo and w/ the Cardinals. This new CD of his is good but not great like Easy Tiger. There isn't anything that quite catches my ear, no song I want to listen to over and over again. Perhaps Ryan should take some time off instead of making one project after another. I still am glad it's part of my collection though.
Free Music Review: Booooring and not HIM Hit: 3 Stars
Doo-Dah and Michael B are the reviews to read. This album is borrrring. Much of his solo work, and the first two Cardnial albums are all great. Easy Tiger...great but a for sure departure. This seems to follow more of where the EP was headed. I enjoyed the Card's when they did Cold Roses and JaxCityNights.
Free Music Review: Ryan Adams is capable of MUCH better than this! Disappointing and bland. Hit: 2 Stars
I am a HUGE Ryan Adams fan. As in, I have every Whiskeytown and solo album, plus some bootlegs and have been proclaiming for years that Ryan is a rock god. I love his music.
But Cardinology is so bland and disappointing. Jacksonville City Nights and Cold Roses were his last awesome albums, and when those came out, and after seeing him play live with the Cardinals was confident Ryan was growing and evolving... that he was going to surpass what is often considered his finest work, his first solo album Heartbreaker. Then Easy Tiger came out. Disappointing and unchallenging, but there were some gems. The EP, Follow the Lights, had a couple of interesting tunes (the cover of Down in a Hole is killer)... but still fell short in my opinion.
Aside from a few good guitar solos and some interesting songs (I thought Evergreen, Fix It, and Let us down easy were decent), it was boring. The couple of decent tracks on this disc are the equivalent to the worst on any of his other CD's. Inconsisent he may be, but on every other one of his albums, there is music that is phenomenal and really resonates emotionally with listeners. Demolition may be considered one of his least consistent, but it has Hallelujah, Chin Up Cheer Up and Dear Chicago. Even on some of his weaker tracks, at least they are taking risks and are musically interesting. Most of the songs on Cardinology are musically unchallenging, boring, lyrically weak. They sound like something they'd play in the background while you're shopping at Macy's.
Don't get me wrong... the Cardinals are an amazing band and Ryan Adams is an incredibly gifted musician and lyricist. It seems that the Cardinals are better as a back up band to Ryan, though, rather than full-on collaborators. But I love the Ryan Adams that wrote Dear Chicago, Cold Roses, A Kiss Before I Go, Come Pick Me Up, Oh My Sweet Carolina, The End... not this stuff.
As a fan who knows Ryan Adams music inside and out, I personally feel this is his weakest album (including Rock & Roll which was written in 2 weeks). This is not representative of Ryan's music. I would check out Cold Roses, Gold and Heartbreaker first and maybe move on to Jacksonville City Nights and Demolition if your new to the music because I would HATE for someones opinion of Ryan Adams music to be based on this. He is capable of so much better. I am still waiting for "the" album... I have faith... it's coming!
