Free Music Review: Weak crossover collection
Hit: 2 Stars

This collection is very sacchrine and not even remotely interesting. I thought that the selection of songs was very calculated and obviously a bow to crossover fans. Why would anybody need two Ave Marias, and Dank Sei Dir Herr, which is a favorite of Sarah Brightman, and Pie Jesu, which I think every crossover artist did at some point? Fleming is considered to be good Mozart singer but I don't even like Laudamus te and Laudate Dominum on this record. The Panis Angelicus is completely over the top, with a horrible flute solo; this is probably the most overdone version I have ever heard. Poulenc's Domine Deus is also very affected.
The only song that I quite liked was L'Adieu des Bergers, even though Ms Fleming's French is rather bad, and this is opinion of my friend who is a native speaker, but at least it showed that she can sing such songs simply and beautifully, if she chooses to. I thought the Hansel and Gretel duet with Ms Graham would be better, and it sounds better but I have to say that thinking of these two middle-age sopranos pretending to be children is little disturbing.
The final Amazing Grace is... I don't even know what is the right word, but it is so terribly overdone that I was embarrassed to hear a classical singer sing like this.
I am a classically trained singer, and I find Ms Fleming's singing very grating in this recording. She skips her usual mannerisms: overuse of portamento, abuse of glottal attacks to cover up the lack of middle register, tendency to scoop, rhythmic waywardness, she is actually staying in tempo. However, she does something very strange with her vibrato, which is more of a wobble here. It gives her strange tone, very unnatural. This is a singer who can sing very clean and with a nice tone and in the past I liked her singing, so I just wonder what happened. She also chooses such tempi, mostly very slow and drawn out, except for Mozart which is done very fast and sloppy.
Anybody who thinks they might like this music because it's sung by a famous soprano should try the music samples first, because they may not like this very saccharine style.
