From the opening grooves of "No Ordinary Love"--a song dripping with heartache and deception--to the strains of "Bullet Proof Soul," Sade offers spot-on rumminations about the enduring power and pain of abiding love. While "No Ordinary Love," "Like a Tatoo," and "Cherish the Day" are bass-driven romps that at once celebrate and bemoan matters of the heart, "Pearls" and "Feel No Pain" effortlessly address social-inequality without preachiness. Sade's band is true to form, at once amply-providing full-bodied support (particularly saxophone, keyboards and bass)and allowing Sade's voice space enough to explore and convey a full spectrum of emotional color. Of course a Sade album would not be complete without either a superlative love song like "Kiss of Life"--which is actually the very incarnation of spring eternal--or a torch song such as "Bullet Proof Soul," which is a sobering indictment of a wayward paramour. In short, the spell-binding grooves of "Love Deluxe" never let up; there isn't a single track that you will want to skip. This album is a splendid and incomparable rebuke to those who dismissed Sade as a glamourous flash-in-the-pan! |
