This is the best version I've ever heard of the Saint-Saens 3rd. I grew up with the Munch/Boston Symphony version, first on LP then on CD. It certainly is very exciting. After hearing Pretre's, however, I think Munch takes the last movement too fast. Pretre's conception is grander and just as exciting. Indeed, Pretre's disc is from the early '60's, when French orchestras still sounded like French orchestras. There is a tartness and febrile quality to the playing that is highly infectious. As for the sound engineering, always an issue in this most sonorous of symphonies, it is excellent analogue, with a full sounding organ part that in no way diminishes the weight of the orchestra's sound. The Carnival of the Animals receives a zesty performance, with only a somewhat receding orchestral texture in the engineering detracting from the total effect. Pretre always has been a fine Poulenc conductor, and his version of The Model Animals has both warmth and spice. Of course, the big draw on this CD is the symphony, and I cannot imagine anything better.
