Free Music Notes for Complete Recordings of Sam Cooke with the Soul StirrersFree Music Review: Soulful, testifying best Hit: 5 Stars
This three-disk set of a young Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers gospel group -- mostly early-1950s recordings -- puts the spotlight on one of pop music's icons, but that praise neglects the glory of the group as an ensemble. Its magic comes forth in typically overworked and underappreciated classics like "Peace in the Valley" and "The Last Mile," and state-of-the-art recording detail and care makes these dozens of recordings enjoyable time after time after time. Recommended to all with at least one ear and an open heart.
Free Music Review: Completists please note... Hit: 5 Stars
This is not quite the complete Sam Cooke at Specialty -- it does not include the tantalising bonus track on the "2 Sides" album.Having said that, it does include the best work done by the greatest soul/gospel singer bar none. So I am not complaining. (The producer of these recordings and founder of Specialty Records, Mr Art Rupe, is never given enough credit for his wonderful work. And for keeping the tapes from the original sessions for future generations to enjoy. Respect due.)
Free Music Review: Incredibly good, historically significant Hit: 5 Stars
Really, really great. It's all I've had in my CD changer for 2 weeks. Especially like the way the songs are in chronological order, so you can hear the sound evolve from pure gospel to soul. Not a cheap CD set, but well worth it. The Soul Stirrers were recording in the 1930's, and when paired with Sam Cooke in the early 50's they really make a great combination. Digital sound, well re-mastered. No tape hiss, cracks, or pops. Great sound, great music, awesome talent.
Free Music Review: IF I COULD SING LIKE THAT AT 19 I"D BE FAMOUS Hit: 5 Stars
You could see how Sam Cooke became a major star in music and the inventor of soul music (Ray Charles also gets props for that). You'll be listening to a song and then you hear this explosive voice that takes the music to the heavens Where it was intended to go. Not only was he the greatest Soul singer, He was definetly one of the top 5 gospel singers of all time. To put it simple. SAM COOKE ROCKS!!!!
Free Music Review: As good as it gets Hit: 5 Stars
Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers are as good as it gets, in mine humble opinion. While there may be too much for the casual listener (3-4 takes of certain songs), to an admirer of Cooke and gospel music in general, this is superlative collection. These discs stand up to repeated listenings, and deepen each time. Sam's vocal "battles" with Paul Foster, the second lead, are just amazing.
