Free Music Review: Sam Having A Party In Harlem!

Coming out the same year and from around the same area this album could easily be seen as something of Sam Cooke's answer to James Brown's renowned Live at the Apollo and in many ways it is. Only difference is that in this case the artist involved felt he had something to prove. Coming out of the gospel world with the Soul Stirrers Cooke crossed over to pop with no creative difficulties. In fact rather the reverse. But as with many before and after him crossover also meant that there was a need to remain connected with the R&B audience as well. And on this album that's just what Sam Cooke did and the success of the concept was far beyond perhaps even Sam's high expectations. With hot and now legendary musicians such as saxman King Curtis and a young Cornell Dupree backing him up Sam tears through his well known classics one after the other from "Chain Gang","Cupid" to a blues soaked "Somebody Have Mery" and sweet romantic soul such as "It's All Right". What is really important here is the performances,musically and from Cooke himself. His report with the audience is amazing. For someone who was fast becomming something of a practioner of super club soul Sam confidently MC's the entire affair with a level of energy and excitment that brings the audience to near fevered frenzy at times. On his closing rendition of "Having A Party" the gospel style call-and-response and singalongs between him and his watching/waiting audience drives it home just where the real Sam Cooke is coming from;he was a gospel/soul man at heart and if there was any doubt that he was losing that sense on his popular hits of the day one listen to this helps you realize it was as much there as it was in this concert. The fevered growls and rasp of Sam's vocal tone on this album is also a firm reminder of why other singers such as Marvin Gaye and Rod Stewart were so influenced by him;I can bet both of them probably had this album in their own personal collections somewhere because listening to this you not only see people like them coming but the man himself delivering his music at the very top of his form.
