Free Music Review: BEST SOUND QUALITY OF A SUPERB VOCALIST
Hit: 5 Stars

I am the proud owner of Sam Cooke's The Man and His Music. And yet I am more thrilled to also own and thus faithfully listen to and enjoy Portrait of a Legend. The sound quality of Portrait of a Legend is significantly and very noticeably better than the sound quality of The Man and His Music. You will better hear Sam Cooke's beautiful and thrilling voice than you have ever heard it in your lifetime! Because Sam Cooke along with Elvis Presley are the very best vocalists of my lifetime, because, more than anything else in music, I enjoy outstanding vocals, and because Portrait of a Legend has superior sound quality, Portait of a Legend is one of the most treasured and most enjoyed cds that I own. If you love Sam Cooke's voice and phrasing, as I do, or if you are considering buying only one Sam Cooke cd, you will truly love Portrait of Legend! This cd epitomizes a MUST BUY CD.

Free Music Review: Pure Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

This particular compilation album not only displays Cooke's virtuosity, but gives a sense of his versatility. From the political lyrics and message of "A Change is Gonna Come," to the soothing "Bring it on Home to Me," the selection spans a range of emotions, and musical settings.

The last track on the album is a short clip of Sam Cooke defining the word 'Soul' through music in a few bars of humming. The narrator informs us that Sam Cooke never grows old: a fact crystallized in that last track, but surely undeniable after having listened to the entire album. Music is most persuasive when it is unadulterated speech from the human spirit. Sam Cooke's music will have the unbeliever whistling to "Jesus Gave me Water," and the most timid dancers ready to twist the night away.

These songs are the essentials. The contribution made to soul music by Cooke is summed up on this album.

Free Music Review: Best compilations since 1986
Hit: 5 Stars

Of all the books, DVD's and CD's that came out in the last few years in an apparent surge of new Sam Cooke interest this CD must be the best available.

The best so far had been the now really hard to get 'Man And His Music' but this CD mixes the best of his days as a gospel star with his own best work that he wrote himself and some of the best covers.

It does show that besides being one of the greatest singers he was also a very good songwriter who wrote some of the most amazing soul songs ever.
The CD really gives you a good oversight of his career and is trealy a Portrait of a Legend. The portrait becomes even more complete with the great liner notes in the CD.

The package is also great, a good cardboard cover and not one of those usual plastic cases.

If you want to buy one Sam Cooke and don't want to spend too much, get this one.

Free Music Review: THE GREATEST
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember when Muhammed Ali beat Sonny Liston; while being interviewed ringside, Ali spotted Sam Cook in the crowd and demanded he be led up to and into the ring. I couldn't help thinking at the time I was seeing the greatest boxer for all times and the greatest singer in the same space and time.

This disc is truly a treasure. The thing about these songs, whether slow & melodic (wonderful world),or uptempo (shake). Sam's vocals make it happen. Many tracks on this disc, remind me of the old "Negro" spirituals (a gospel feel). This CD is a bargain for any Sam Cook lover, 30 songs for this price! Simply put Sam Cook is the greatest male singer for all times. It is a shame he had to leave us in his early 30s I wonder what kind of portfolio he would have accumulated had he lived longer. Never will there be another like him, his music transcends time and space.

Free Music Review: The Only Sam Cooke CD You'll Ever Need
Hit: 5 Stars

I'd always loved Sam Cooke's music ever since I was a kid. When I started looking for a Greatest Hits album/CD (not interested in box sets) in the late 80s & 90s, there wasn't much out there, & NONE of them had "A Change is Gonna Come." Not only does this album have that song & all of his well-known hits, but a sampling of his gospel songs as well (all of the Greatest Hits albums/CDs I'd seen over the years were either all gospel, or all pop). The essay by Peter Guralnick at the beginning of the booklet is nice, & the liner notes for each song are short paragraphs (instead of the usual one or two sentences) that give a great background of the song & what Sam was doing at that time. Whether you've just found his music, or you were around when these songs originally played on the radio, this is the CD for you--it's wonderful!! :D
