Free Music Notes for Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964Free Music Review: Quite Simply The Best Sam Cooke Compilation Ever. Hit: 5 Stars
Sam Cooke is truly a legend. He's one of the most important figures in the R & B genre, paving the way for such greats as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
"Portrait Of A Legend" contains 30 of Cooke's most well known songs as well as some lesser known material, all presented with great sound. Of course, classics like "You Send Me", "Cupid", "(What A) Wonderful World", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' The Night Away" (a true party starter), "Shake", "Another Saturday Night", "Having A Party" and his powerful rendition of "A Change Is Gonna Come". You also get some lesser known stuff, like "Jesus Gave Me Water", from Sam's very first recording session, and a slew of other underappreciated gems.
The liner notes make for a good read, but it's the music (and the great sound quality) that makes this one a keeper.
Free Music Review: There's nobody like this legend Hit: 5 Stars
I'm 17 and most kids my age most likely know nothing of Sam Cooke but we also don't know we should love Sam Cooke because it's great artist like him that mediocre artist now sample. I was shown this album by my aunt who said I needed to hear something different and real, I listened to this album and couldn't stop listening to it. The production alone is beautiful and it takes you to a different place. There are so many different instruments used that just make everything feel good. Sam's lyrics are lyrics that you can relate to and learn from. He talks about everything from life to his girl getting taken from him by his best friend. This is an album that everyone should hear because Sam Cooke truly is a legend and this legend needs to be heard.
Free Music Review: BEST OF SAM'S MUSIC SO FAR!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I just received this CD 2 days ago, and let me tell you this is the best CD in terms of quality sound by far!! I only have a regular CD player and saying that, the sound is still superb--I can only guess what it sounds like on CD player that has the SACD as a feature attached to it, it must really sound WOW. I understand about the two layers that was included on this CD, but on some songs it almost sounds it sounds like they were from a different take rather than the one that was previously released, but nevertheless, this is still the best of "Mr Soul" released on CD-- I also plan on buying "At the Copa" on SACD HYBRID as soon as possible!!
Free Music Review: Classic! Hit: 5 Stars
As everyone else has said, this music is untouchable. The loss of Sam Cooke at the age of 33 may be the greatest loss in pop music history. Who knows what he would have accomplished as a musician and social leader? Don't waste any time. BUY THIS! It's the best $14 you'll ever spend. Makes me glad to be alive every time I hear it.
Also, I don't know what's causing other's problems with this CD, but I put it in my computer and ripped it to MP3 using Musicmatch jukebox with no problem. Itunes isn't nearly as good as Musicmatch anyway so you may want to try to copy it using another program if you tried Itunes. As I said no problems here!
Free Music Review: Best single disc representation of one of, if not THE, greatest male soul vocalists ever Hit: 5 Stars
I'm only 28, but growing up, my dad helped me develop an interest in what is truly some of the greatest music ever made, and Sam Cooke was a frequent favorite around the house, in the car, or wherever. I'll bet if he was still alive today, he'd be just as big as he was in the 50s & 60s. It's hard to pick any one song as the greatest Sam Cooke song, but here are what I think are his 10 most crowning achievements.
You Send Me
Just For You
Win Your Love For Me
Only Sixteen
Wonderful World
Chain Gang
Summertime
