Free Music Review: Amazing journey from gospel to soul...

Being a follower of all things R&B and soul, I knew a little of Sam Cook, the Soul Stirrers and others artists on this 2-disc collection. What amazed me is how good it all sounded and how good it made me feel. I can see why the churches of the south might be filled with a congregation bursting with joy if this is the sort of offerings that one could find on a Sunday morning. From the get-g,o it is apparent that Cook is in charge. The between song banter finds Sam Cooke in a very Brian Wilson like way; telling his flock exactly what to sing. And how...
The 1st disc is pretty much straight ahead gospel music. Harmonies we lucky enough to hear. If you have sampled the Dixie Hummingbirds or the Original 5 Blind Boys of Alabama, you may have sampled this sort of collabrative group singing; call and response. But it is quite moving, with out being overly preachy, so that a secular person can enjoy the uplifting messages of the voices on this disc. Sam Cook is on these recordings, but most of the tracks on the 1st disc are credited to his band the Soul Stirrers or the Womack Brothers, but the solo Sam Cooke has yet to be born here, as a singer.
Disc 2 finds Sam Cooke the singer and Sam Cooke the producer and the evolution of his sound to a more popular forum: The Record Charts. I won't say side two is better, but some of the material is certainly more familiar. The Simms Twins "Soothe Me" in fact was heard on side 1 as a gospel rant under another name, as are a couple of other tracks that Cook has now popularized by replacing "God" or "The Lord" with "She" or "Her". Cook caught a lot of grieve from his followers for moving away from gospel music, as I've heard it.
Honestly, the quality of some of the backing voices falls of on side two as Cook replaces the likes of the Soul Stirrers with what sound like hollywood hired backing vocalists on a few of the songs. The syrupy strings filling at times, where once there were sweet voices. And it is rarely the best route.
This is not a knock on the SAR collection. The quality through out is great. Cook produces songs with former bandmate Johnny Taylor, but rock and roll historians will marvel when the Valentinos (Bobby Womack) sing a couple of favorites "Looking for a Love" (for many years a staple of the live J Geils Band set) and "It's All Over Now" (covered by a young Jagger and Richard). The grittiness at the close of side 2 let's us know that the times they are a changing.
A wonderful collection for those interested in the evolution of soul music from it's gospel roots, and thr man who helped perfect one sound and re-invent it as another sound: SOUL MUSIC. Soulful Sam Cook.
