Free Music Notes for Don't Do Anything

Free Music Review: Part 3 of the 'Minimalistic Trilogy' is very good!
Hit: 5 Stars

A lot of these songs just beg for repeat listens... perhaps because they are so short in length. I'm really stuck on "No Explanations", "Little Plastic Life", "Don't Do Anything", "Shake it Down", "Sister Rosetta", and "My Career in Chemistry" - the latter being my favorite song on the release. "Flowers Up" is good - "Another Song" reminds me so much of classic Paul McCartney - even the background vocals. Oh, and I absolutely love the new rendition of "Black Sky". The rest of the songs I can take or leave but they are by no means terrible songs.

One of my favorite lines is from "No Explanations" - "I thought if he understood he wouldn't treat me this way... no explanations.... she looked me over and over and couldn't locate me... no explanations... no more explanations". That's awesome. If anyone has ever been in that situation before, you know exactly what she's talking about. I love the repetition of the beat 'Boom! Boom! Bang! Bang!' in this song!! I'm surprised I haven't damaged the speakers in my car when I crank this song up loud. ;)

Even though I have enjoyed this 'Minimalistic Trilogy', I do hope that Sam kicks the music and the mood up a few notches with the next release. And, she most likely will. Sam doesn't stay in one place for very long. She likes to keep reinventing herself.

Free Music Review: The best of the Nonesuch bunch
Hit: 5 Stars

Although Sam Phillips' latest CD bares similarities to her previous two Nonesuch records, that is to be expected and appreciated. Too often artists neglect sonic integrity in an attempt to make records that "sound different." What matters here is that the songs are brilliant, Sam's voice is as haunting as ever and she still has a lot to say.

I personally found Don't Do Anything to be the best of Sam's three Nonesuch records and the most consistent record throughout. Very few artists write melodies as catchy as Sam, particularly on Can't Come Down, Little Plastic Life and My Career in Chemistry, while being lyrically interesting.

Buy this CD, support good music, and don't insist that artists change their sound just to be "different" from one record to the next. It's what killed Omnipop and ultimately caused Sam's musical popularity to fizzle.

Free Music Review: Another Excellent Sam CD
Hit: 5 Stars

While it may be unrealistic to assign five stars to an album that's been out only two days, it's still fairer than slapping a hasty one-star rating on a brand-new release. Whatever happened to getting familiar with a piece of music and letting it grow on you before passing judgment?

Granted, "Don't Do Anything" has more in common with Sam's previous two albums than anything else in her catalog, but that doesn't mean it's a rehash. For one example, where else have you heard Sam accompanied by only her own piano, as on "Another Song"? There's a lot of good stuff here ("Sister Rosetta", "Flowers Up", "Signal", "Shake It Down"). I don't pretend to have this album down pat just yet, but I do know that it's a heck of a lot closer to a 5-star album than a 1-star.

Free Music Review: Little Plastic Lies
Hit: 5 Stars

So the new disc is the same as the last two (2) critically & publically aclaimed Cd's "Fan Dance" & "A Boot and a Shoe" isn't that a GOOD THING. Yes after a few listens I'm a little depressed, but thats Sam's appeal. She puts her heart out there and if you get it great, it's not formula. Popularity isn't all its cracked up to be. I've seen Coldplay three times and they were great shows, but Please stick Me in that crowd of 200 because I'll go home touched by the talent of a great artist. I've been humming that boring "Can't come Down" for three days and it was all Yellow too!!! 4 1/2 stars and a 1/2 star to offset the haters.

Free Music Review: Acquiring a taste for Sam Phillips
Hit: 5 Stars

I like to eat food that fights back - something good and crunchy to chew on. I feel the same way about music. I want something I can listen to over and over - something that grows the more you listen. Don't Do Anything is that kind of music. The production sounds both new and old at the same time - the drums are BIG (or silent), the guitars brown and warm. Sam has chosen to sing beautifully - the harmonies exquisite - the lyrics evocative, poetic, mysterious, ironic, intelligent. I guess you can tell I really like this album.
