Free Music Review: Of Virtuosity, Consistence and 'Feeling It'

And then there was Game 5.

But before that, there was a music concert on HBO here in India - a rerun of an earlier telecast. It was Carlos Santana in support of his 'Supernatural' album. I had other things to watch all over television but I kept getting pulled back to the virtuosity of the man who is enjoying one of the biggest comebacks of all time. And in that comeback he's teaching us an important lesson that might have served young Kobe well in Game 5. The magic of Supernatural on CD is that it feels like a really hip compilation album with the likes of Dave Matthews and Everlast doing a great job of rubbing shoulders with Lauryn Hill, Rob Thomas and Eric Clapton. 'Supernatural' is a team effort (and what a team!) and that's why it stands up tall against other offerings from 1999. In concert though, it was apparent how the string wizardry of King Carlos was what held the uneven performances together and the ease with which he switched from an acoustic to his flame-hued Les Paul was, in itself, awesome. Through all the music, the mind-bending solos and even the high point of the production - when Rob Thomas joined him onstage for 'Smooth' I was struck by how much the sound of the album (and the concert) is dependent on the 'showing up' of all of Santana's support musicians.

So yes, Kobe showed up big time in Game 4 and if he hadn't the team would've been facing a 2-2 situation with the three point-rich Pacers but that didn't mean that Kobe was suddenly supposed to believe his press release. He took the ball to the hole as if Shaq was back on the bench and for all his zipping in and out of the zone his score sheet wasn't something that even the MIA Dennis Rodman would've shrugged about. Of course Kobe Bryant has been hailed as an unusual talent ever since he started playing in the NBA as an 18-year-old but the big man in front has been doing it for about a third of Kobe's life! Bryant needs to defer to the Blaq Supaman if LA is going to get it done in one of the next two games and bring home the championship.

Surely Shaq can't do it all alone as was proved by another 35 point and 12 rebound performance that was the only Lakers' high point in a 33 point loss to the resurgent Pacers. But Shaq had fewer looks at the basket in earlier parts of the game because Bryant and a couple of the other Lakers were too busy inventing new ways to hit the rim hard and ineffectively. It was akin to having Rob Thomas play guitar on Smooth himself ! Just not on.

The most important thing about being in a team is knowing what your role is and playing it to perfect. In Game 4 Kobe knew; in Game 5 he thought he was starring in the sequel.

Not treating every new day as different - always a bad idea. Santana in the meantime is the new king of self-reinvention...
