Free Music Review: A Great CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This is my favorite CD that I own (Okay, so my CD collection consists of two CDs). It seems like every other kid my age, listens to awful rap and ear splitting rock music. This is definitly QUALITY music.

Great Songs

1. Love Song-My favorite song on the CD. I downloaded it before I bought the whole CD and played it all the time, so I'm kind of sick of it. But, it's clever, catchy, and really good.
2.Bottle It Up-Another great song. This one is original and cool, not much else to say, you have to hear it.
3. Morningside-An interesting title for the song with the catchiest chorus on the CD. It's upbeat and fun.
4. Gravity-Slow and pretty. This one has beautiful words and great sound.

Good Songs

5. Vegas-Super original, I'd never think you could write a song about something quite like this. At first, it sounded just a little odd and weak, but it really grew on me.
6. One Sweet Love-A pretty ballad, with a lovely chorus.
7. Fairytale-Cool song about fairytale characters in modern times, although it's really a metaphor for love gone wrong.
8. City-Sadish slow song about loneliness in the big city. Nice piano and instruments.

Okay Songs

9.Love On The Rocks-The first verse is jazzy, fun, and catchy, but I don't really like the rest of the song. If they carried through the effects of the beginning it'd be a better song.
10. Come Round Soon-A little scary (Okay, not really, but its first line is 'I could use another cigarette') It's seems sad, but I'm only partially liking it.
11. Between the Lines- The weakest ballad, kind of boring, too big (It's just how it sounds to me, big without trying) but okay.
12. The beginning sounds exactly like some Church or Christmas song. The chorus is kind of cool, but this song isn't exactly original.

So, that's my five-star review. SO worth it! Buy Little Voice, you won't regret it!

Free Music Review: You can't waste the day wishing it'd slow down
Hit: 5 Stars

Singer-songwriters are garnering a lot more respect nowadays, as evidenced by singers like A Fine Frenzy, Brandi Carlile, Charlotte Martin, and now, Sara Bareilles. Being included in company as the afforementioned is tough, did Sara pull out the stops and give us a worthy addition?

By God, did she ever.

There's really not a better time to get into piano-driven pop(ish) music than now. A Fine Frenzy came out of nowhere to give us an outstanding CD. Tori Amos, with 2007's American Doll Posse, reminded us why she is the pioneer in this type of music. And the lesser known (which I maintain is a criminal act to not know who she is), Charlotte Martin, who is truly proving to be a force to wrecken with. But now we have Sara Bareilles, a fresh-faced girl with a voice that demands attention with lyrics that are impossibly catchy.

Little Voice, I will admit, is a CD that needs to be heard several times to be truly appreciated. Sure, I liked it after the first time, but after the sixth and seventh times, I found myself wanting to hear it nonstop. Songs like Love Song, Come Round Soon, and Gravity are all sure to jump out upon first listen. Others that are sure to come around are Bottle It Up, One Sweet Love, Morningside, and Many The Miles.

Each song is complete with incredible vocals, expect that automatically, but the music is well worth a listen as well. Come Round Soon boasts the most earcatching music of the CD easily, but Many The Miles, and Gravity come in a close second and third.

My favorite songs are One Sweet Love, Come Round Soon, Morningside, Many The Miles, and Gravity. Basically, if you're the least bit into this type of music you're sure to enjoy this CD. All the things you love about piano-driven music are present and accounted for, all you have to do is put forth the effort to listen to it.

Free Music Review: Brilliant from Start to Finish
Hit: 5 Stars

As a professor of music (I teach the History and Social Analysis of Rock Music) I try to stay on top of current events and trends in pop music. I have owned this CD for months and I never get tired of it. I feel Sara is one of the brightest new young talents on the scene today. This CD has catchy piano grooves reminiscent of Elton John and Billy Joel. Her voice is soulful and distinctive - truly unique. At times you can hear the bluesy sound of Bonnie Rait, the grace of Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. BUT the stunning element is the power of her voice... it's BIG. In the music "biz" it's referred to as the "money note". When Sara sings a money note - you can buy stock! What's even better is that she doesn't do it all the time, making it all that more effective when she does. Just listen to "Come Round Soon" and "Gravity" and you'll see what I mean. Her voice can reflect her mood from shy and vulnerable to assured and demanding.

Finally - the lyrics. They are excellent. Sara is the new Joni Mitchell:

Thought provoking - "There's a harvest each Saturday night at the bars filled with perfume and hitching a ride. A place you can stand for one night and get gone"

Transparent and Soul Bearing - "You hold me without touch. You keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love and not feel your rain."

Clever word play - "Leave unsaid unspoken / Eyes wide shut unopened" or "Savor the sorrow to soften the pain sip on the southern rain"

Strong willed - "The angels said I'd smile today / Well who needs angels anyway?"

"Little Voice" is a little gem. I look forward to Sara's next project.

Free Music Review: Grows Even Better with Age
Hit: 5 Stars

I picked up this CD a few years ago after "Love Song" and "Bottle It Up" managed to get stuck in my head. When I first listened to "Little Voice," I found it agreeable enough, but was not overly impressed. However, this is CD for which my appreciation has grown as I continue to listen to it. It is one of the few albums I listen straight through to, rather than just placing them on shuffle in iTunes or on my iPod.

Each time I listen to it, I am reminded of what an excellent whole this album is. Though the well worn songs mentioned above that received lots of radio play show a more confrontational side to Bareilles, the CD itself is composed of a fascinating combination of different emotional states.

Tracks like "Between the Lines" and "One Sweet Love" offer a more poignant, reflective viewpoint on relationships, for example. "City" and "Vegas," on the other hand, offer a powerful look into the emptiness and difficulty of being a performing artist. Because the CD is anything but one sided, I have found that different parts of it have "spoken" to me at different times, varying which track is my favorite.

In all, "Little Voice" was one of the strongest albums released last decade. It is subtle and understated in such a way that I suspect anyone who gives it several listens will find it grows better each time you hear it. If you haven't picked it up already, you shouldn't hesitate to do so now.

By the way: if you can find a copy of the Deluxe Edition, that is the best way to go. The additional "Stripped" EP is a pleasant mix of acoustical versions of tracks from "Little Voice" and a few additional non-album songs.

Free Music Review: Certainly not for the musical elitists...
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not going to sit here and compare Sara Bareilles to older and more generally accepted as brilliant artists like Sarah McLachlan or Toris Amos. I'm sure they themselves are rather sick of being volunteered to being some sort of benchmark used to beat down artists like Sara Bareilles, A Fine Frenzy, and her contemporaries because some people are too arrogant to bother admitting that there's a distinction between these "generic" new artists.

Sara Bareilles' music is catchy, it's pop, and most importantly, it doesn't have its nose up in the air. She writes and sings songs with the one objective of sending her message in the manner that she knows best, and fortunately, the product is something that apparently most people can enjoy.

To the ~elitists~, I'm sure Imogen Heap's angle has been done before, shall I write a negative review by virtue of that right now? Originality is overrated. Musicians cannot pick the way they want to sing, their musically influence, the sound of their voice, and whatever else that reflects who they are and the kind of music they produce. Get off your high horse because if originality is what singers now-a-days lack, then perhaps future generations will have to start learning to sing out of their ears because after a while, ALL ANGLES will be used up and they will just become thoughtless, generic, and cheap copies of the past.

P.S. this isn't an attack of Imogen Heap btw, she's wonderful. Nevertheless, her fanbase seem so intolerant of others singer/songwriters (at least on Amazon) I just had to bring it up, cheers.
