Free Music Review: Great album, but see her live
Hit: 5 Stars

Sara Bareilles is the real deal - she sings like a dream, rocks the piano, and breaks out the catchy hooks like nobody's business. Her major-label debut blends the funky, soulful edge of Aretha Franklin with Natasha Bedingfield's pop sensibility, but there's no question Sara is a unique artist in her own right. If you're looking for smart, jazzy piano-pop that's easy on the ears but a step above in lyrics, pick up this album as the perfect feel-good summer soundtrack.

Lyrically and musically, the track list is solid, spanning ballads, kiss-offs to lousy ex-boyfriends and record executives, and the dreams and troubles of making it on your own. The production, while crystal clear, has its ups and downs. Most of the time Sara's vocal and the many instruments work well together, especially the drums propelling the ridiculously catchy "Morningside", a standout track that has taken over my CD player. Other highlights are the percussion on the bluesy "Many the Miles", and the gentle strings stirring in a great new version of "Gravity". But I'm not feeling the production on two of my old favorites, "Fairytale" and "Come Round Soon", which sound cluttered and overdone. Sara is the kind of artist who can carry a song on the power of her voice alone, and it's disappointing for longtime fans to hear it needlessly compressed. At the same time, take this as simply a recommendation to see her in concert. Sara's raw talent is obvious even underneath the bells and whistles, and this album still works as a strong introduction to a five-star singer. Get ready to wear out your copy.

Free Music Review: The Bareilles martini.. groovin' not stirred
Hit: 5 Stars

Take two parts Norah Jones, one part Tori Amos (without the scary lyrics), and one part Fiona Apple and you get one sweet mixture by the name of Sara Bareilles.

Her cd, Little Voice, from the first taste to the last drop is a serious bit of sultry, rockin', heart-felt music. Sara keeps a good variety in her music going. It's not all jazzy sweet (Love On The Rocks.. no, not the Neil Diamond song), let it out love song (Bottle It Up), I want your love song (Many The Miles), or love gone wrong song (Fairytale) standards. Music, lyrics, and her amazing voice will mesmerize you throughout it. No 'boy bandish/same beat in every song' music here, people.

Her first single from the cd, Love Song, you wouldn't exactly categorize as one. It's more along the lines of being for those who are second and third guessing their relationships. See, folks? Proof that there actually ARE beautiful women out there that know a bad relationship when they see one in their own lives. :)

I saw her at a mini-performance and signing in San Francisco. She sounds just as beautiful, if not moreso, in person as she does on the cd.
I had suggested to her to make One Sweet Love (my favorite) her second single from the cd.

Peter Gabriel would be wise to allow her to record her version of "In Your Eyes" on her next cd. She sang it on KFOG (SF radio station) recently and was nothing short of wonderful.

Little Voice : the Bareilles martini: drink it all in and enjoy!

Free Music Review: An Album with a Perfect Combo of Soulfulness and the Upbeat? It is Possible!
Hit: 5 Stars

Some of the other reviews couldn't have said it better. This is one album where all of the tracks can be listened to repeatedly without getting tired of them. Bareilles' songs are a great combination of light rock, soul, and pop. I became interested in the album when the Amazon review said it was for fans of Sarah Mclachlan and Alicia Keys. Though I am a fan of their music, it does tend to get too "soft" for me, as a previous reviewer mentions. Imagine my pleasure when I listened to the first track "Love Song," which was definitely rockin' (need another example? Listen to the opening of "Morningside" - so cool). Many of the other songs continued on the track set by "Love Song," and increased my listening pleasure even more. Even the gentler songs have lovely melodies that are fun to listen to. Like the other reviewers, I'm very addicted to this album right now. Rarely is there an album where every single track is unique yet enjoyable, perfect complements to each other and so fun to experience. Favorite tracks: "Between the Lines," "Many the Miles," "Fairytale," "Bottle it Up," "One Sweet Love," "Love Song," "Come Round Soon"... oh heck, let's just say all of them! Oh and how can I forget? Awesome voice! Go Bruins!

Free Music Review: Straightforward emotion without getting overly sentimental
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard Sara Bareilles in New York City, where she was opening for Britpopper Mika at the Gramercy Theatre. I was instantly blown away by her throaty, full voice and right-to-the-point lyrics. I bought the sampler she had available at the show (which consisted of "Love Song," "Bottle It Up," and "Gravity") and played it over and over again.

Although my expectations for this CD were relatively high after having listened to the sampler so much and having heard a decent amount of the rest of the album live, they were all met and then some. Comparisons with Fiona Apple and Norah Jones are inevitable, as the female singer-songwriter-pianist genre is fairly constrained, but while Sara may not be an instant superstar, as the other two were, her sheer talent is certainly comparable. Her voice, while a bit more on the conventional side than the other two, is powerful and has a great range, and her songs convey just as much emotion without some of Fiona's melodrama.

A definite buy, especially at Amazon's price of $8.99. My favorite tracks are probably "Love Song" and "Vegas," but there's not a clinker on the album. Couldn't recommend it more!

Free Music Review: Breakthrough Artist 2007
Hit: 5 Stars

Definitely one of the top, if not even the best, release of 2007. Although it's a different style of music, 'Little Voice' had the same impact on me than the '93 Counting Crows Release 'August and Everything After' which so far has been my favorite album. Listening to it for the first time, you'll recognize the song that you already know from the radio ('Love Song'). The rest of the album then fades to the background of whatever you're doing when you're first listening to it. Listening to it the second time, you pick up on great tracks such as 'Gravity', 'Fairytale', 'City' or 'Between the Lines' and every time you listen to them, they become better and better - they still do after listening to them countless times on the way to and from work. I've been watching a couple of live-clips from Sara on the web and have to say, that I'm even more impressed with her ability to perform these songs on stage. Looking forward to seeing her live in early 2008 as part of the VH1 You Oughta Know Tour - You really ought to know Sara! :-)
