Free Music Review: Judgment temporarily impaired .....
Hit: 5 Stars

Previously,I mistakenly gave this album 2 stars and posted this review :

"With the exception of the two duets with Fernando Lima and Andrea Bocelli, Brightman's symphony album is a total failure. Sarah's charming and alluring voice is still there, but the songs and music, she has chosen, are too predictable. Now that Sarah has transformed herself into a blonde skeleton, her focus on music has slipped away. Sarah Brightman's, greatest musical contributions are, for me, her past work. On a more positive note, at least she still looks good.... I guess there's a bright side to Brightman's last album.

It breaks my heart to say that about Sarah's work, but when I'm used to only perfection from her, I have no other choice..."

I think I misjudged this great album for two reasons:
A-Sarah always was pretty, but she looks outrageously beautiful on the cover, I might got intimidated by her new blonde look. I admittedly confess that feminine jealousy might got in the way of pure music enjoyment.
B-personal crisis might be another reason for not taking the time of hearing and understanding an artist that I always loved.

This weekend, I listened to each and every song again. Just like I was mesmerized by Pasion, and Canto Della Terra the first time, the other tracks got to me eventually.

Hearing Symphony's words again was a great pleasurable experience:

"..... you might not know what you've got, until it's gone
But then nothing ever hurt like holding on
I am scared and unprepared and I feel like falling
So can you tell me, where did we go wrong?

Symphony
It's gone quiet around last night
How I wish you would hold me
And that you never told me
And it's better if you leave

But everything is broken and it's better that we give up
And remember how we once had something beautiful"

I take what I said back, Sarah still got it.

Free Music Review: Up and Running
Hit: 5 Stars

When I bought Sarah Brightman's Symphony DVD, it came with a sticker saying she had become the world's best-selling soprano of all-time. Then I watched it and thought: She's still in her forties and still improving. How much better can the best get?

Try this: Close your eyes while playing Brightman's Symphony DVD so you won't be distracted by the beautiful lighting in the gorgeous cathedral in Vienna. Just listen to the audio. Then listen to Leontyne Price, Cecilia Bartoli, Maria Callas, Kiri Te Kanawa, anybody, and decide for yourself. Is Sarah Brightman great, or what?

The title song, SYMPHONY, and ATTESA are beyond beautiful. Brightman, the pioneer of popularized classics and classicized pop, has done it again, adding her own lyrics to five of the fifteen songs. Like NELLA FANTASIA, a Brightman-introduced vocal, here's new material for Il Divo, Andrea Bocelli, and Paul Potts.

But, more than anything, this concert is about duets: Two inspiring classical duets with Alessandro Safina (CANTO DELLA TERRA and SARAI QUI), two rock-style duets with Chris Thompson (I WILL BE WITH YOU and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) and a moving Spanish rhythm piece with Fernando Lima (PASION).

The song that got the best audience response was RUNNING. Originally done at an athletic event in Japan, RUNNING is the latest Brightman song to be introduced in athletic settings. In 1992, at the Barcelona Olympics, Brightman ran down the concrete stadium steps in spike heels to sing AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE with Jose Carreras. In 1995 and 1996 came A QUESTION OF HONOUR and TIME TO SAY GOODBYE (with Bocelli), both sung at boxing matches in Germany. Brightman's version of NESSUN DORMA was chosen to launch the televised 2002 Major League Baseball playoffs. And who can forget her contribution to the magnificent opening of the Beijing Olympics?

Sarah Brightman is still up and RUNNING.

Free Music Review: 4 years later, and who would have thought she still had it in her?
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved La Luna, it was one of her best, if not, her VERY best. Harem was not very good, because it tried too hard to replicate the sound of La Luna, just with some lame techno beats added in to the first track.

And now, Brightman redeems herself with SYMPHONY. Symphony is an amazing album, and is her 2nd best. With only one dissapointing track (Pasion), this albums shines, and proves her vocals to be the best in this type of music.

GOTHICA: A cool intro, with a creepy gothic feel and I love the lightning.
FLEURS DE MAL: Awesome!!!!!!! The orchestra, that choir chanting "WE RUN UNTIL IT'S GONE" with Sarah when she sings "Et le fleurs de mal, un amour fatale..."
SYMPHONY: Took me a little while to get into the breathy vocals, but still a good song.
CANTO DELLA TERRA: Good song, but Kind of ruined by Bocelli.
SANVEAN: Good stuff.
I WILL BE WITH YOU (WHERE THE LOST ONES GO): My favorite song on the album!!!!! I love the duet with Pauil Stanley, he so fits into the song and yet I like the Alt-rock feel to this song.
SCHWERE TRAUME: A German song, and it is so distinctive yet I love it.
SARAI QUI- Good song!
STORIA D'AMORE- Good song, and I like the latin.
LET IT RAIN- It took me a while to get into this song, but now I LOVE it.
ATTESA- Awesome song! My second favorite.
PASION- The only weak song. It would have been better if not for Fernando Lima.
RUNNING: AMAZING SONG!!!!!!!!! I'd never thought I'd see the day where she makes a last track as good as "La Luna". I love the Bruce Springsteen feel, and I love to turn this song up LOUD LOUD LOUD on my big stereo in the living room and let it run through the whole house. Plus I love how "Fleurs De Mal" is reprised at the end!

So this is a great album, and I loved it so much. It's easily the best album of the year already!!!!!!

Free Music Review: Great CD after a Long Wait
Hit: 5 Stars

Saturday, November 17th 2007, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, Sarah Brightman Performed Fleur du Mal, telling us that her new album was on the horizon. 5 years since her lackluster(if you vehemently disagree, that's no big deal) Harem, and in fact, 8 years since the great La Luna, in my opinion, Sarah Brightman's finally back to what she's good at. I am totally thrilled. The arrangement of the tracks is good. Gothica is a good "introduction" to Fleur du Mal, Symphony is a touching pop song, especially in this rendition compared with Silbermond's version. Canto Della Terra is one of the best duets I've ever enjoyed, slightly bettering Time To Say Goodbye. Sanvean is surprisingly beautiful, Sarai Qui, a great translation of There you'll be. I Will Be With You (Where The Lost Ones Go) and Let it rain are both gorgeous and beautiful, and then, the gem of the whole album, Attesa, I just can't tell how much I love this song. But I'm a little bit ambivalent about Running, the closing track. It is based on Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's the Planets Suite. Jupiter is one of the most widely known masterpieces from the British composer, and has been adapted in many wonderful works including I vow to thee, my country, Glenn's Flight in OST the Right Stuff and Jupiter from Japanese singer Ayaka Hirahara. But the adaptation here is sort of ugly to me, the main structure of the original score is broken and there's an "annoying" silence in the last two minutes. But, anyway, Running is still enjoyable if you don't know who Gustav Holst is. (There's a bonus track Forbidden Colours exclusively in Japanese version)

Symphony is better than Harem and truly worth 5-year of wait. To some extent, it showcases unprecedented diversity among all Sarah Brightman's albums. It's difficult to tell whether it's the best, but it's really close.

Free Music Review: Top of her game
Hit: 5 Stars

After a wet, dreary New York day, I was glad to be greeted by the new Sarah Brightman album. It's hard to believe that it's been five years since Harem. It was worth the wait, though.

The first thing I noticed is that this one had a lot more duets than the previous ones (Eden, La Luna, Harem, etc.) Sarah Brightman duets are always a bit iffy for me. I usually enjoy them, but they don't always work. This time, the duets were great. She does a good job of complementing her companion's voices. I'm glad they included "I Will Be With You" because I knew it was released as part of a Pokemon movie and was worried that it wouldn't get release in the US.

I can't say any individual song jumped out at me as they did in the past. I'd probably say that the duets were generally more interesting and stronger that the solos, especially Sarai Qui. The way their voices soar towards the end of the song makes me tingle. If I had to pick a favorite solo, I'd probably go with Attesa.

This album didn't really have a "theme", which was fine with me. I guess the theme can be seen through the photos accompanying the CD instead of the music themselves. I noticed that Wikipedia called his a more "gothic" album, but I'm not sure what it means. To me, "Fly" was more gothic. This was more theme-less, and it worked.

To be honest, I didn't instantly like this album as much as the previous ones. I can't really figure out why, but the more I listened to it, the more I enjoyed it. At this point I can't quite decide how it'd stack up with the previous albums, but I suppose it's unnecessary to always compare artists to their prior works without allowing individual ones to stand alone. Brightman, at her worst, is still better than most; but I suppose I'm biased.
