Free Music Notes for Afterglow Live (CD/DVD)

Free Music Review: Another tour, another live album... But is that a bad thing?
Hit: 4 Stars

By complete coincidence, I happen to catch Sarah on the "Afterglow Live" tour in early November in Antwerp, Belgium, while I was there on business. Unlike her shows in North America, which usually are in large arenas (reflecting the big star she is here), the show was in a small venue, maybe 2-3,000 seats at most. It made for a memorable evening, frankly.

Only weeks later now comes the "Afterglow Live" CD (15 tracks, 67 min.). Couple of general observations: (1) If you don't like the "Afterglow" album, don't buy this. 8 of the 10 "Afterglow" tracks are on here. (2) If you bought the "Mirrorball" live album, be aware that 6 tracks on here overlap with "Mirrorball" ("Adia", "Hold On", "I Will Remember You", "Angel", "Building a Mystery" and "Sweet Surrender").

So why buy this then? (1) First and foremost, as a souvenir if you happened to have seen Sarah on this tour. One thing that struck me is that the setlist of the Antwerp show that I saw a few weeks ago, is virtually identical to the setlist on this album. I looked into this a bit, and conclude that the setlist hardly ever changed from show to show. (2) The DVD of course. The DVD comes with 8 additional tracks, including such gems as "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy", "Blackbird" and "Ice Cream". In all, this release is really intended for the Sarah McLachlan fans, more so than the public at large. Within that context, I give "Afterglow Live" 4 stars.

Free Music Review: Great value, wonderful songs, slightly disappointing DVD
Hit: 4 Stars

If you like Sarah Mclachlan, then this is worth every penny you spend on it. She is wonderful live, and this package delivers what you pay for it. 15 songs on the CD, and a live concert DVD to watch is far more than you get with most CD purchases.

The songs are excellent, though there are some songs that I wish were included that weren't (I Will Not Forget You, Elsewhere, and Time really should have been included).

The DVD is a little strange to watch, with a lot of camera switching and some really annoying out of focus shots. It is still enjoyable however, 23 live Sarah songs is something that is always a joy to watch.

The only reason this received 4 stars from me instead of 5 is because of the above mentioned camera switching and out of focus shots. The quality of the performance is as good as it gets, and if it were released with a newly edited DVD done by a real editor, I would definitely buy it again.

Free Music Review: Great DVD, Don't be put off by "editing & focus" comments
Hit: 4 Stars

The dvd in a nutshell. 4 stars, probably 4 1/2
This is a far better experience than the Mirrorball DVD
Where Mirrorball had that "vaseline over the lense" look, Afterglow Live is crystal clear, the set looks great, Sarah looks great and the performance is as good as it gets.
Sure the styling leaves a bit to be desired, the director does chop and change quite a lot in parts and misses some of the important cues but overall it's not as bad as some are making it out to be. There is an overuse of the outoffocus, intofocus trick and pointless shots of backs of heads and guitar necks but overall it's fine. At the end of the day, hey, it's all were going to get of the Afterglow tour. Any fan should run out and buy this.
The 5.1 Dolby Digital mix is fantastic with great kick in the bottom end. Again a marked improvement over the flat mix that was Mirrorball.
Just my 2 cents

Free Music Review: CD being sold in 2007 no longer crippled.
Hit: 4 Stars

I originally bought this CD/DVD combo in 2005, and experienced the irritation and unhappiness at being unable to rip it to MP3 as others have already noted. However, I noticed in a Barnes & Noble this weekend that the same CD no longer contained the sticker warning on the outside of the front of the jewel case, nor the longer fine print/copy warning on the back panel graphic. So I took a chance and bought it again to see if Arista had listened to the buying public and fixed the crippleware version. Hooray, they did ! It ripped OK to MP3 (I used Roxio v.9.5) & subsequently imported it into iTunes & it uploaded fine to an iPod. Thank you, Arista ... a fine album that we can now listen to in ways other than a CD player.

Free Music Review: great
Hit: 4 Stars

I wanted to give it 5 stars, but couldn't.
The audio and picture quality are great.
I think it was a very good idea to include both a cd and dvd together for an affordable price.
The performance is very very good.
Definitely put this in your must buy list.

The only part I don't like is how much the camera angles switch around. Watching it on a smaller TV is fine, but when you try and watch it on a large screen projection it makes it much harder to watch. This isn't the only music video that is like this. Seems like a trend to be constantly switching angles.
