Free Music Notes for Age of NeroFree Music Review: These guys stick to their formula, and it works Hit: 4 Stars
Unmistakably Satyricon, same scales, similar speeds, very formulaic, fits right in with their other albums. But as always, they have some killer riffs and the execution just wants you to start head banging right away. I can only imagine how awesome it must be to see these guys touring for this album. I can totally see the whole crowd head banging and jumping up and down in sync cos its easy, no complex time signatures, straight forward, punchy, slow in your face riffs.
So why 4 stars and not 5. I had to cut one star because of recording quality. Based on Now Diabolical and Volcano, I had certain expectations for the recording quality of their new album. Satyricon has been one of the better recorded metal albums and Volcano has been one of my reference metal recordings. This album just sounds compressed, clips all over the place, there is no definition in the treble, the crashes are distorted, guitar isnt clear and punchy like their earlier albums. The whole thing sounds warmer, and distorted. I don't know if this was intentional, but I much prefer the cleaner sound of their earlier albums.
Free Music Review: Not amazing but not bad either Hit: 3 Stars
Well, I have to say that I am honestly not as impressed as the other reviewers with this CD. I do not feel that this is a 5-star CD nor do I feel it is close to Satyricon's best. My big problem with the CD is that it just isn't black metal and it doesn't have the same atmosphere that other Satyricon CD's or other Black Metal CD's offer. I would say that this CD more fits in with Doom Metal than Black Metal, albeit with shrieked vocals. Of course, a lot of Satyricon's recent works straddle on this line, so diehard Satyricon fans will probably balk at me. For some, this doomy sound is great, for others, such as myself, this isn't quite what I was looking for from Satyricon. The tracks are all decent, but very similar and at times I wondered if the entire album could just be one huge song. "Black Crow on a Tombstone" is definitely the stand-out track here, although I find myself also liking "The Sign of the Trident". I just wish the stand-out track wasn't the only one that is memorable on this album. All in all, I would say that this CD would be good for metal fans trying to get into Black Metal, since it has a plodding, slower, doomy feel to it, but being a seasoned Black Metal fan, there are many more Black Metal CD's I would rather pop in my player, even from this band. All in all, a decent offering, but I was looking for something more.
