Here we are with another Satyricon album, and another wave of backlash from the critics and the undeground. Let's face it; Satyricon gave up "real" black metal long ago, according to the elite in the genre. But now, they're doing something even more true to what REAL black metal should be. Satyr and Frost have stripped down black metal down to the bare, dry bone, only leaving its primitive core to the listener. Really, it's almost like they're leaving it up to you to say if it's black metal or not.
Lurching and menacing riffs crawl like a snake out of its den, supported by the straight-forward and pounding percussive power of Frost. Satyr's vocals sound more hellish than ever, giving the listener images of one pissed-off black-haired guy snarling his hatred towards life itself. "The Pentagram Burns" is a prime example of this, especially during the chorus. Satyricon have evolved into something totally in their own league. While bands like Carpathian Forest and Darkthrone are doing "black 'n' roll" with touches of irony and crude humor, Satyricon are straight-faced and stern in their approach. The lyrics reflect this perfectly, especially on the slamming title track and the furious "Storm of the Destroyer."
Most of the songwriting is leaned more towards a mid-paced approach, but rest assured, these songs can and will bang the head that doesn't bang. The grim, menacing, and eerie riffs will leave no doubt in anyone's mind that Satyricon are here to rip you into shreds. All of the songs follow a basic rock formula: verse, chorus, repeat, solo, verse, chorus, etc... But the difference is, Satyricon write such strong songs that it doesn't matter. The riffs and choruses are all catchy as hell, but retain a middle finger mentality and wickedness.
Honestly, this album receives my vote for album of the year. Satyricon have taken the heart of black metal, pumped it full of adrenaline and misanthropy, and made it ten times more powerful through the use of conventional song structures and clean production. Pick this up at all costs, but don't expect it to sink in immediately. Simply put, this album rocks hard, and is the darkest chapter in Satyricon's journey thus far.

Pioneering black metal artists Satyricon have signed a North American licensing agreement with Century Media Records for their new album Now, Diabolical. The North American version will include a bonus track and enhanced video.
