Free Music Review: This album will make you 'believe.'
Hit: 5 Stars

Savage Garden dominated the airwaves from 1998 to 2001, and their second and final album as a duo, "Affirmation," has some of the best reasons why. Singer Darren Hayes's vocals really come from the heart, ringing with passion, talent, and truth, and Daniel Jones's innovative musical arrangements set it off nicely, creating a complex, catchy backdrop that suits the mood of each and every song perfectly. If you like rock (as opposed to metal), pop, soul, or dance, this is the band for you.

Each and every song hits just the right emotional chord. The play-it-at-every-high-school-dance "I Knew I Loved You" may be as overplayed by now as "My Heart Will Go On," but that's because it's that resonant with so many people. Schmaltzy, yes, but what good love song isn't? How about "The Best Thing," which sends the same message with a less boy-bandish, more madcap tone that communicates a more euphoric, disoriented approach to love, or "Chained To You," a downright dirty-rock-meets disco number?

Also in the love song list is "Hold Me," a song that deals with relationships that encounter problems, and the simplest ways to solve them. A little physical affection goes a long, long way. ^_^

Ex-lover songs are also prevalent here, in the form of the surprisingly cynical "Gunning Down Romance," an anti-love song that depresses me every time I hear it, but only because it's supposed to. "I Don't Know You Anymore," my personal least favorite track, is still an effective portrait of the awkwardness and distance former lovers can often find themselves subjected to. Less downright sad, and more poignant, is "The Lover After Me." Listen to this one with a box of Kleenex handy, as well as "You Can Still Be Free," a poetic, surreal song dedicated to a friend the band lost to cancer.

More resonant to the non-lovestruck are "Crash and Burn," a supportive "I'll Be There For You" number (if you can find the video, watch it!) and "The Animal Song," a wonderful, jungle beat-driven number I interpreted as being about getting away from unnecessary complications and finding joy in simple pleasures. The boys even get a little socially involved with the tear-jerker "Two Beds And A Coffee Machine," a subtle way of speaking out against domestic violence in the days before the Dixie Chicks ripped Earl a new one. ^_^

That just leaves the first song on the album, the title track, and this reviewer's favorite song of all time: "Affirmation." Incredibly upbeat, heartfelt, and poignant, it's a social commentary that decides to eschew the bitterness and cynicism of modern society in favor of a more positive outlook on the way things work. Every single line starts with "I Believe..." but by the end of the song, they had me believing, too. Daniel's guitar-and-keyboard combo are the perfect background to this song, and it's such a powerful, resonating number that the group used to use it as their finale on all their tours, and even today Darren uses it to finish his own concerts during his solo career, albeit with a different instrumental arrangement.

All in all, I cannot stress how much any fan of good music should pick up this CD. Brilliant arrangement, stellar vocals, and messages that are, for lack of a better term, timeless.

'I believe.'
