Free Music Review: The Best STD Album

Saves The Day came to me in High School, around 2000.
Can't Slow Down-amazing debut, crisp, fast, Lifetime-esque, but really their own.(Look up Lifetime if you don't know them, I was independently introduced to them around the same time as STD, but from different people. Hello [...] and Jersey's Best Dancers are classic punk-pop, which for people who hate that phrase, means artists that have melodies incorporated into their aggressive, fast style.)
Through Being Cool, I'm Sorry I'm Leaving.
TBC was the album that let you know that STD could make an accessible record while still holding on to their creativity and individuality. Just listen to the first track and imagine yourself running over rooftops as this one-minute firestorm rolls by.
I'm Sorry, but i'm leaving, on the other hand, let's you know that this band was more than just beautiful noise. Chris Connelly wrote incredible songs that show just how great his voice is and how limitless his and their potential could be.
Stay What You Are was thought by many to be their apex. It was a moodier record that dragged its emotions through the streets for everyone to see. That endearing quality led me to claim, around 2002, that it was not just my favorite STD album, but possibly my favorite album ever. Every song is good, and it's an album where i rarely, if ever, skip from song to song.
I don't skip around on In Reverie either, as it has turned into my favorite STD album. I just got it back from a co-worker who liked it.(I used it as her introduction to the band). It's an adventurous piece that conjures up strong imagery throughout. (Listen to Monkey and Tomorrow's Too Late) among others. In reverie is mature and challenging, but what did anyone expect from a first class band like Saves the Day.
After all the harsh criticism surrounding In Reverie, Chris unfortunately felt forced to go in a different direction with Sound the Alarm and Under the Boards. Sound the Alarm is great, and has huge hooks mixed with masterful guitar progressions. Under the Boards is hit or miss, some songs great, some not. The song "under the boards," when in the context of being under the billboards, is self awareness mixed with self affirmation. (Chart success and musicality usually have nothing to do with each other, anyway.)
All this leads up to the new album, which will be called "Daybreak". As an optimist and a STD believer, I can't wait for this album as the title alone makes me feel that Chris and the guys are at their peak again, ready to deliver on the potential and the momentum they have built for themselves.
All in all, STD has never made a bad record, and they never will. It's ultimately up to the individual to decide what they like, and what they don't. Peace
