It's the nature of the business I suppose that good classic songs get covered by modern day artists to unleash them on a new generation of listeners. Some may say blasphemer when you look at the songs MS is covering here. Yes the original recordings are fabulous but some stuff is just crying out to be recorded with a bit more zest. I'm not sure what the appeal is but I love to hear old classic songs beefed up so they really rock. A lot of old 60's stuff sounds great in the modern era with some extra oomph added that they just didn't have back in the day. Got that here in abundance.
"Shape of Things" ....what a stormer
"Hey Joe" .....Know one could sing it like Jimi but wow can MS play
"Pearly Queen"......not bad for an old geezer on guitar
"Whiter Shade of Pale"....makes a boring song really tasty
"Never In My Life" .....Good one
"Long Misty Days" ....I have a lot of Robin Trower's stuff and nothing beats the original haunting epic....very close second
"I Got the Fire"....what an amazing guitar solo (you just have to buy this album!)
"Voyager"......same singer and better than the original from Gamma
"Stealer"....yep
"Theme from an Imaginary Western"...great version, still no let up!
"Built For Comfort"...now this is blasphemy!....should of left well alone.
The rhythm section is solid and basic through out, nothing to flash or adventurous despite the undoubted quality of the performers. Davey Pattison is no Phil Mogg but still does a terrific job. This album is all about the guitar playing. Quite a showcase.
