Free Music Review: The Beauty of the Austrian Baroque

Those of us who came to love the solo violin works of Biber have been gratified to learn that there are more riches to be fished from that delicious 17th-century Austrian stream. Case in point, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (1620-1680), Biber's most important Austrian predecessor in the field of string music (and possibly his teacher). Schmelzer published SONATAE UNARUM FIDIUM (Sonatas for one violin) in 1664, the first collection of violin sonatas published by a German-speaking composer. Variation sets form the backbone of the first four sonatas, while the last two mix dance movements with wonderful meditative, ruminative sections. The Fifth Sonata in C minor is a powerfully emotional composition, while the final, A major, sonata has an irresistible autumnal glow. Much of the indefinable Biber aura hangs over the music of his older colleague as well, although Schmelzer's music is more gently lyrical and less flamboyant.
I love the baroque violin playing of John Holloway. His style is so pure and clear, like a fine stream of molten gold. His approach is more mellow, inward and poised than his colleague Andrew Manze, who has also recorded these Schmelzer sonatas - altogether more appropriate to the "elegiac, meditative, serene" qualities of Schmelzer which Holloway alludes to in his program notes. Holloway here experiments with a unique and sumptuous continuo combination: organ and harpsichord, each "realising the figured bass to the full harmonic, contrapuntal and rhythmic potential of their instrument" (to quote Holloway again). The recorded sound is a little more dry than others of Holloway's recordings which I have heard, with somewhat less bloom to his tone; it is still pleasing. This CD is a must for any lover of 17th-century violin repertoire.
