Free Music Review: Inspired!

This is indeed a 'special' disc; and, furthermore, a special legacy left by two magnificent musicians.
I have this music in Decca's "The Classic Sound" iteration, not the present "Legends" series. So, I have the Britten Sonata (with the Schumann and Debussy) instead of the Schubert "Arpeggione Sonata". This suits me just fine as, contrary to most of the other reviewers here, the Schubert has never really appealed to me, and Britten is a composer I always find interesting (even though his Cello Sonata isn't one of my favorites).
I wish to focus my review on two particular aspects of this CD.
1) The Debussy Sonata is a great piece of music! I've always had a fairly ambivalent attitude toward Debussy. His most famous pieces--La Mer, Nocturnes, his piano music--don't do much for me, but some of his late works, such as the Cello Sonata, the Violin Sonata, are entirely different: more clarity of texture, a cleanness of line, a greater interest in rhythm. These elements appeal to me much more than the so-called Impressionist 'wafflings' of, say, "La Mer".
2) The piano accompaniment (collaboration would be a better description) of Benjamin Britten. A more wholly apposite and sympathetic performance would be impossible to imagine! Listen carefully to Britten's playing in the Debussy and you will hear something very close to utter perfection. While Rostropovich is undoubtedly a master, it is Britten who steals the show for me on this disc.
This CD reminds us of what a consummate musician and musical genius Benjamin Britten was. This collaboration must surely rank as one of the very great 'comings together' of musical masters in the history of recorded music; like Grumiaux/Haskil (Beethoven), like Fournier/Szell (Dvorak).
This is a must-have CD!
