Free Music Review: Epic String Quartet

The G major String Quartet is the work that, more than any other, opened my mind to Schubert. What is so special about this epic composition? Along with other late works such as the C major String Quintet, the G major Quartet illustrates the "cosmic" scope and amplitude to which Schubert took the Viennese Classical forms towards the end of his career. The first movement lasts over twenty-three minutes (including the exposition repeat). The sequential chains of modulations, the major-against-minor, the astonishing textural variety, the suspense, and the intimate thematic unity all confer on this movement a majesty and mystery that only the greatest musical structures achieve.
This recording preserves a live performance in New York in 1985 featuring a quartet of star solo performers. Of its very nature, it lacks that final polish that studio edits could achieve. But it makes up for this in energy and fervor: one is not likely to forget the full, vigorous, and ample bowstrokes which the quartet produces at the quartet's outset. The instantaneous applause and cheers which greet the last chord of the work are a well-deserved reaction to a marathon performance. I am not as enamored of the quartet's rendition of the Mozart Adagio and Fugue, which sounds a little rough. But of course, you will be buying this for the Schubert rather than the Mozart curtain-raiser.
