Free Music Review: Perahia at the peak of his expressive powers

Twenty years ago, before age and injury made their claims, Murray Perahia was the prefect Schumann and Schubert pianist, gifted with a wonderful lyrical instinct, phrasing that could move the listener, and just enough fire to keep every movement alive without driving the line too hard.
The other reviewers have limited their praise mostly to the Schubert A major Sonta, but if anything, Perahia's Schumann is more successful -- the work is much harder to convingingly hold together. It moves ahead with a satisfying combination of passion and sense. Perahia remade the Schubert in 2003, a very accomplished, perhaps more polished reading, but this earlier one has more variety and inner life. It also has a point of view and some unexpected gestures, which can't be said of Perahia's playing in general as he matured. But for my taste, both readings are a trifle restrained.
A shame that Sony's piano sound, although close and strong, has so little breathing room around it.
