The last two symphonies of Franz Schubert put farther apart themselves from the rest of the set of Symphonies because of the fact, both of them expressed with meridian clarity the well advanced musical thought of his composer.

The "Unfinished" Symphony is perhaps one of the most significant examples of an incorporeal and ethereal Romanticism that might have worked out as perfect accompaniment for any of the greatest Romantic works by then (Goethe's Werther). That elusive lyricism and nocturnal tunes prefigure by years Schoenberg's Verklaerte nacht and even Mahler's Seventh Symphony.

On the other hand we are aware, on one hand, "The Great" was a deserved and heartfelt homage to Beethoven, but also, it constituted the most forceful evidence the spiritual achievement of Schubert; although he was living his last days, you will never note there's a bit of self complaint. On the contrary and making a fugacious comparison respect Mozart's Kv 622, what we may feel in this work is a spring gladness that denotes a ravishing and joyful tribute for life.

Under this perspective, Schubert admits two clear different ways of being expressed: One a la Furtwangler, exploring the countless insights of an existential Romanticism; and the other one would be a Mediterranean vision, filled of renovated freshness and accents of necessary reflection.

The Alsatian conductor Charles Munch bet for the second choice and made a superb musical statement, supported by this marvelous Orchestra whose sound was always free of vaunt.

Both versions still stand out as one of the most innovative ever recorded. Of course these are not definitive ones. You may talk about brilliant "Unfinished" performances, such as Ferenc Fricsay, Furtwangler and Vegh, and pyramidal versions of the Great such as Furtwangler, Kertesz, Asajina or Walter, but in general terms, this album is a must have, because possess conviction, integrity and honesty.
