Schumann, Handel, Haydn, Telemann: Concertos for Four Horns
I remember this CD when it was released a few years back, but did not give it serious consideration as, firstly, none of the works were concertos and, secondly, the cover photo is of a natural horn, minus mouthpiece, while the horns featured here are modern valve horns. When I stumbled over it again recently and saw the good reviews here I thought I should get it and have a listen.
The performances here are not outstanding, while I am not over familiar with the Schumann, there are numerous orchestras/ensembles that play Handel, Telemann and Haydn far better that those here. In the Haydn there are 4 minutes missing from the adagio, and the last movement marked moderato, rather than the usual moderato molto-presto, drags to such an extent that it takes 25% longer than usual.
Notwithstanding these criticisms, the music is pleasant and enjoyable, the sound is good and the Naxos/Amazon price is excellent. So you might decide to buy it for the program choice, but don't expect top class performances.
