A 'HIT PARADE' OF GREAT SINGERS DELIVER WONDERFULLY INSPIRING MUSIC LEAD BY ROBERT KING.
In 1608 Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672) was given a grant to study with Gabrieli in Venice. This was an auspicious time musically, for the musical developments in Venice were setting the trend for the whole of Europe enabling Schutz to take in both the old and the new styles; the old polychoral tradition exemplified in the massive motets of Gabrieli was being superceded by the new more intimate style which involved smaller ensembles of voices and instruments.
At the same time, the rise of opera was seeing refinements and developments in the field of recitativo. Interesting from a musicological point of view, 'The Christmas Story' is the earliest extant Nativity setting to use recitative for the Evangelist. And, it is indeed a wonderful piece of musical drama presenting an extremely vibrant and pictorial work. Add to this the clever use of instrumentation: rustic recorders and dulcian are employed for the shepherds, trombones for the high priests, and two cornets or trumpets for King Herod.
The Court Diary describes 'The Christmas Story'(1660) as 'the Birth of Christ in recitative style'. The major narrative of the work is recited by the Evangelist who is accompanied by a small organ and string bass. Schutz writes this with a great deal of word-painting, and the pacing of the story is carefully calculated. The Preface to this composition states it as being: 'History of the Joyful and Merciful Birth of the Son of God and Mary, Jesus Christ, our only mediator, Redeemer and Saviour'.
The three main characterizations are: the Angel(soprano-Ruth Holton), who sings with a sweet angelic sound -the Evangelist (tenor-John Mark Ainsley)who presents a well-paced and sympathetic Evangelist with his beautifully light and nimble voice- and Herod (bass, Michael George),who provides a wonderfully deep and blustering characterization. There are 19 sections in all interspersed with small vocal and instrumental ensembles, whose renditions are first-rate.
Gabrieli, one of the most important Venetian musicians of his time, had a life that revolved around writing music for various state and religious occasions. Christmas, being very special, was celebrated with tremendous pomp and style. Four Christmas Motets are presented here:
Four Motets by Gabrieli: 'Quem vidiste pastores' (O Shepherds, whom do you see?) is one of his finest works. Scored in 16 parts for 2 choirs of instruments, this work shows elements of the later Chamber style as the six singers enter one by one.
'Audite Princepes' (Listen, you Princes) is scored for two 5-part choirs, one 6-part choir and continuo and seems to be one great block of sound.
'O Magnum Mysterium' has a mood of subdued reverence, fitting for its subject matter.
'Salvator Noster' (Our Saviour) is a magnificant setting for three 5-part choirs and independent continuo. It has a variety of textures and moods, and it all ends in a blaze of sound,
Robert King has amassed an excellent group of talented and experienced early music performers, who present a profoundly moving rendition of this inspiring music. It is certain to be enjoyed by early music fans and especially 'believers'.
This was first recorded in 1989; this is a Helios reissue from Hyperion. It is accompanied by excellent liner notes that include pertinent informatin and the words of all the selections.
