Free Music Review: How didn't this see the light of day in 94? 4.5 stars

I havn't written a review on Amazon for a good year or 2 now but thought i'd just drop a quick review for Scientifik's re-released album as it wasn't getting much love round here. Basically the other reviewers hit the nail on the head, whoever decided back in 94 not to release this to the general public really wants shooting, this is a great album with a set of A-list producers and really caprtures that 94' NY sound that I love so much.
Comparable to Illmatic (though not as good) in track length and the fact there is no real skip material, the only reason I didn't give a full 5 is there were a couple of tracks that were decent and nothing more and Scintifik's subject matter tends to get repetitive over the course of the album. While he is far from an innovative MC, he does have a great flow, is lyrically sharp, and possibly most importantly the producers have backed him with some absolute bangers. Buckwild, Diamond D & RZA all handle production and all provide some serious heat, but surprisingly Edo G IMO hands him the best beat on the album with the opening track Lawtown. If you're into that 94 sound and still havn't picked this up then you're sleeping, this is almost essential listening I would say. I've also noticed the price gradually going up since I bought it a year or so back, so don't be surprised if it slips out of print. My advice pick it up now if you havn't already!

Boston rapper Scientifik recorded two albums in the 90s, "The Most Blunted" and "Criminal". Unfortunately "Criminal" was denied a proper domestic release due to industry politics and label bankruptcy. So for the last 12 years the record has lived on in the boom-bap afterlife of vinyl bootlegs, hissy dub cassettes, and low quality MP3s. That is until now. Traffic Entertainment and Executive Producer Edo. G now present Scientifik's "Criminal" as it was intended to be released back in the day. "Criminal" boasts a mid-90s dream team of producers as a young RZA, Buckwild, Diamond D, Edo. G and Vinyl Reanimators all contribute beats. Even with his untimely death in 1996, this record retains a cult following. It ain't hard to tell why the music is still captivating. On the mic Scientifik is certainly competent, and by 1994 standards he operates correctly, dropping jewelz and relating crime sagas in a soldierly, commanding voice that flexes just enough to reveal his hunger and intensity. And it doesn't hurt that some of the beats are absolutely bangers. The mind blowing single "East Coast Jungle," backed with "Lawtown" (Lawtown being his hometown of Lawrence, MA) is as good as it gets; each song expresses that moody, boom-bap hardcore rap sound that any genuine Hip Hop fan will appreciate and covet. Guest verses from magnetic legends Diamond D and Edo. G only accentuate Scientifik's depth of album-carrying charisma. This is vintage cerebral street music at it's best finally garnering the respect it deserves.Rap & Hip-Hop Music CDs
