Free Music Review: Pure Fun
Hit: 5 Stars

After so much hype surrounding this album, I knew I had to go out and buy it. After listening to the Scissor Sisters' self titled debut constantly for five months, it's definitely a purchase I'm glad I made. Stick Elton John and the Bee Gees in a room together, and this disc would more than likely be the result. Campy, glamorous, and downright fun; the Scissor Sisters have succeeded in making an amazing glam-rock, disco album, which the masses will surely fall in love with.

The album begins with 'Laura', an awesome and catchy tune you'll find difficult to get out of your head. It begins with a strong piano before Jake Shears jumps in with his unique and recognizable vocals. There's so much going on in this track, you'll hear something new each time you listen to it. 'Take Your Mama' was the song that first brought a lot of attention to the Scissor Sisters in North America. It's cute and fun, but not one of the best on the album. I love the lyrics "And if the music ain't good, well it's just too bad/We're gonna sing along no matter what". It's this all-in-good-fun attitude which I feel really showcases what the group is all about. I was nervous to hear 'Comfortably Numb'. Pink Floyd's original is one of my favourite songs, so when I saw it listed on the back of the album I was more than a little frightened. Let's be honest, when a band or artist covers a great, classic song, they usually slaughter it. That wasn't the case with the Scissor Sisters though. Not at all. In fact, 'Comfortably Numb' has become one of my favourite tracks on the album (though I still prefer the original). They didn't attempt to simply do a karaoke version of the song, which demonstrates, not only their creativity, but also their bravery. I applaud the Sisters for not destroying one of my favourite songs of all time.

'Mary' is a beautiful ballad, with a stunning piano arrangement. Even though I like the song, and do think that it's brilliant, it's my least favourite track off of the CD. This track reminds me of both Enigma and Erasure. Call me crazy, but I think that it would be the result of Enigma's haunting music and Erasure's sweet, honest lyrics and vocals brought together. 'Lovers In The Backseat' is unquestionably one of my favourite songs on 'Scissor Sisters'. After such a breathtaking ballad, the album speeds up with a midtempo track, but not without an exquisite introduction which fits the songs together perfectly. The vocals are very sweet and simple, and they leave the listener with a slightly sad impression. 'T*ts On The Radio' is the only song from the album to have a female lead, and it's definitely one of the best tracks. It has an awesome beat, and is probably the track with the largest drum influence. This one will make you want to bop your head along as you listen.

The seventh track, 'Filthy/Gorgeous' is absolutely stunning. It opens with whispering vocals before Jake begins singing in a very Bee Gees inspired, high-pitched voice. The instruments used in this song are incredible, there's always something fresh and unique to listen to. The best part comes near the end of the track when Ana Matronic begins singing sexy almost-background vocals. 'Music Is The Victim' is an awesome, catchy song. It's very upbeat and danceable. It was originally one of my favourites, and while I still like it, I no longer consider it one of the best on the album. 'Better Luck', like both 'Laura' and 'T*ts On The Radio', has a catchy beat that's kept up with strong drums. The lyrics are sweet, humorous, and genuine. 'It Can't Come Quickly Enough' is absolutely amazing. It's no doubt a masterpiece, reminiscent of classic glam-rock (think Queen). The music is mysterious and almost epic, which adds depth to the already flawless vocals. The lyrics are simple, but beautiful, fitting together perfectly with the tone of the track. The last track, 'Return To Oz', is a charming, though sad, narrative song. When compared to the rest of the album, the music on this track is uncomplicated and minimal, which suits the theme of the song as a whole. The lyrics are heartbreaking and beautiful, which together with the melody makes for a brilliant close to an amazing album.

I would definitely recommend the Scissor Sisters' debut to anyone and everyone (as I have been doing constantly). If you're a fan of Queen, Elton John, or the Bee Gees, this is a record you won't want to miss out on. I'm already anxiously anticipating future releases from the Scissor Sisters, as their creativity and downright fun music is something I find extremely enjoyable.

THE FINAL VERDICT: 95%

Scissor Sisters Poster

Those dismissing the self-titled Scissor Sisters as a product of New York's latest band fad are jumping to conclusions. Yes, there's a certain cabaret aspect to what they do, but that's not to dismiss them as frivolous nightclub entertainment. That's only half the story. "Comfortably Numb" may nod to gay disco but this eclectic bunch of fashionistas have more interesting reference points tucked up their puff sleeves. If anything, the prevailing mood here is sunny AM rock, the kind of thing you might have tuned into in 70s New Jersey. "Take Your Mamma Out," perhaps the first song about coming out to your mother in a gay club, and sung by Jake Shears like primetime Elton, is a cracker. So too "Tits on the Radio"--slick barroom boogie that takes a venomous swipe at New York's increasing conservatism. Best here, though, is the anthemic "It Can't Come Quickly Enough," a retro carve-up of Nick Kershaw and the Pet Shop Boys that's more powerful than it sounds. Ignore it at your peril. --Paul Tierney
