Free Music Review: one of the best electronic albums i've ever heard
Hit: 5 Stars

out of the people that jumped ship after nick 'left' scorn (as in: went to jail), probably 35% left with gyral and 30% left with this one (the other 35% giving up on 'zander'.) i have no idea why...this is the album where he went from heavy organic dub soundscapes to a more skeletal, sparse sound (with a few exceptions) that ranges from calm and tranquil to downright unsettling. like zander, this album can elude both those that aren't willing or able to engage in 'active listening' and those that have preconceived notions of what constitutes 'music'. their loss.

here's a quick run down of a few of my favorite tracks (although the album is amazing as a whole):

1. look at that - this builds from the kind of uneven drum pattern that dubstep producers can only dream of ten years later to a slithering ambient fever dream and sets the tone of the album wonderfully.

3. the next days - this is what i meant when i said 'tranquil'. a gorgeous, relaxing tracks that then flows into...

4. spongie - this track is so malicious and so goofy at the same time; the centerpiece is what sounds like a sample of a rhys chatham's trumpet with a seagull stuck in it. this is looped over a downpitched layer of the same sample that slowly shifts in and out of sync while a sub rattling bass riff wobbles around clumsily. if that monster rabbit from 'the twilight zone' movie had an actual cartoon, this would be the music.

5. out of - wow. this track is one of the reasons for my gushing review title. like the review in AP said 'this track sounds like the groove is skipping, then you remember it's a cd and not vinyl.' pretty accurate; this is also one of the tracks where mick shows off his vocal prowess and it is right up there with any of the napalm related vocalists i've heard. if it wasn't for the brilliance of this track, i'd feel robbed that he doesn't do it more.

9. nut - THUD. the heaviest track on here and right up there with gyral and zander for sheer sonic OOMPH. fans of kevin martin take note. a beat that sounds like a drum kit the size of mt. everest takes center stage and is then augmented by a fuzzy and insanely thick bass. how he manages to slip a few other ambient sounds in with this wall of thump is beyond my tiny brain.

in other words, new or used - BUY THIS. you'll be glad you did.
